Default Low centre channel volume

Hello,
I'm having an odd problem. This happens on and off, but usually just to dolby digital tracks. When I go to play a movie, sometimes the sound is low from the centre channel and a bit muffled sounding.

I'm using a ps3 to play the dvds/bds and a sony hdmi receiver (it can accept and deal with a 5.1 pcm signal).

I've found one solution to the problem, but it's a bit of a pain. I can go to the bd/dvd settings and re-enter that the ps3 should send out audio through hdmi as pcm and I get the centre channel back to normal.

Does anyone know why this happens?
