PS3 Upconversion - Blu-ray Forum

Anyone know if it is feasible that the PS3 could be updated to do upconversion to 1080p. If so when is this update likely to be released? Frankly if it is possible I am surpised it wasn't implemented from day one. Perhaps to reduce competition with stand-alone BD players?

Supposedly DVD upconversion is going to be unlocked along with a bunch of other features in a March-ish firmware update.

There is no technical reason why SD DVD upconversion would not be added to PS3 in one of the forthcoming firmware releases. PC-based players, like PS3, have advantages compared to the regular SoC based machines in this area: their upconversion is handled in software and therefore is not limited to chip related restrictions. PS3 will become as good an upconverter as the software written for it. For all I know, it can be no worse than HQV. The question is whether Sony wants to make this happen. But we all surely wait in anticipation.
