Yes, the PS3 is better..

Seriously, I have a Samsung and the PS3 does produce a better PQ. Stop thinking of the PS3 as a gaming machine and more of a multi-media center and you will see what a great deal it is.

I have the PS3 and the Samsung BD-P1000. The PS3 has much better load times and the PQ, at the very least, equals the Samsung.

I have been very pleased with the PS3.

And I am not a gamer but I have been buying some games and playing the free demos.

In all, it is quite a versatile machine for the money.

Sorry I don't have a BD player but I do own the PS3. It loads just as fast as a DVD player. I have no idea what "slow" load times are with Blu-Ray...lol.

I have the Panny and the PS3. The PS3 loads a lot faster. The Panny is definitely a better Blu-Ray player, but the PS3 is an excellent player for $600. The biggest downside to the PS3 is that there is no analog outputs for 7.1.

Default My evaluation

I have both (see sig).

Here are the advantages of each:

PS3
  • Better load times
  • Better fast scan (1.5x with sound)
  • Faster repsonse to remote
  • Plays CDs and SACDs
  • Internet connectivity
  • Almost like a mutlimedia hub
  • Memory stick slots
  • USB connectivity
  • Plays games! (duh, it's a gaming console)
  • Above all, it is almost infinitely upgradeable and expandable like a computer (which it essentially is) and with all the ways to connect other devices to it via USB, wifi, ethernet, and Bluetooth.

SONY BDP-S1
  • Beautiful looking piece of A/V equipment
  • Builit like a tank
  • The best in picture quality: the contrast, color, depth, and resolution are all well above the PS3
  • Upconverts standard DVDs beautifully

On the last few points, the PS3 is also nice-looking, but only second best. The PS3 does put out a great picture and I would have been satisfied to have it as my only Blu-ray player if I had never seen the PQ of the Sony standalone.
