Default A slew of questions for the well educated!!

I have been typing questions in single posts but have decided to bunch them together in hopes that a well educated home theatre individual can help me, or a multitude of them. So here they are and i greatly appreciate anyones help that gets involved!!!

Setup:
Sony KDL 52W3000 HDMI connected.
Sony 40G PS3 HDMI connected.
Samsung HTX 72 HTIB (i know i know). HDMI connected.
Scientific Atlantic HD-DVR HDMI connected.

1. I am noticing when i move far left and right of the TV it seems to get washed out and dull looking. Then when dead center picture looks rich and dark.. I thought this odd because my previous Sony KDL 46v2500 did not do this at all. Any ideas why?

2. I set my power saving to "low" like suggested in a calibration for this tv and noticed the overall picture is darker and blacks are richer. But i had this thought, everytime a movie ends and it goes total black screen except the white text credits the picture darkens significantly. Now is this due to power saving adjusting the black levels? i can imagine it manually adjusting during a movie that has a dark scene making the picture altered since it does during credit rolling as well. Plenty of movie scenes get that dark, this seems like a bad thing or abnormal at the least.

3. I was wondering exactly what the "color space" setting does? My eye notices that it enhances reds and darkens and "spreads" the background areas of the picture when on "wide" instead of standard.

4. Apparently my tv is now 1080/24p as opposed to my previous 1080/p. What exactly does this mean? Is it also true that if i went to the most current hdmi cable (version 1.3 or something) that i get a cleaner signal? Or is this whole hdmi cables vary just a myth?

5. I seem to not be able to get rid of "everyone has a sunburn" on my picture. i have adjusted reds, hue, etc and i either wind up turning everyone green or making the picture too pale. Any ideas?

6. Is there any way to convince my wife that its necessary that we have to buy at least 5 blu rays a week?

Thank you for all your help, it is immensely appreciated and i look forward to some real guidance!!!

1. No clue on that one

2. Turn Power Saving and Advanced C.E. off, that should stop any auto adjusting.

3. I don't believe any HD devices use xvYCC now, so nothing. (Are you talking about Color Space? Different setting if so.)

4. It means you will get 24 frames per second, for film like presentation.

5. Go from warm2 to warm1 (A proper calibration is in line)

6. Tried it, it's never going to happen.

I adjust my power saving depending on ambient light. High at night and off in daytime.

3. I was wondering exactly what the "color space" setting does? My eye notices that it enhances reds and darkens and "spreads" the background areas of the picture when on "wide" instead of standard. Leave it alone.

4. Apparently my tv is now 1080/24p as opposed to my previous 1080/p. What exactly does this mean? Is it also true that if i went to the most current hdmi cable (version 1.3 or something) that i get a cleaner signal? Or is this whole hdmi cables vary just a myth? It supports film based sources(24 frames per second) and will display them more naturally.

5. I seem to not be able to get rid of "everyone has a sunburn" on my picture. i have adjusted reds, hue, etc and i either wind up turning everyone green or making the picture too pale. Any ideas? Reduce the color level (leave hue set at std)

6. Is there any way to convince my wife that its necessary that we have to buy at least 5 blu rays a week? 1 Wooden chair and 2 rolls duct tape. (but watch out when you release her)

Thank you for all your help, it is immensely appreciated and i look forward to some real guidance!!!
peace

I would give the TV a calibration using the Ratatouille disc or DVE if you want a more advanced calibration. The color space setting when not set to "normal" is considered just another torch show room gimmick, I would leave it set to normal.

What Hasn't Changed:

With all these spec versions around, and equipment and cables having been designed and tested in accordance with one version or another of the spec, it's natural that people worry about the compatibility of equipment and cables. Device compatibility is a complicated subject and is really outside our area of expertise, but when it comes to cables, we can give some reassurance. The basic characteristics of HDMI cables have not changed from one spec version to another. They have the same conductors, in the same configuration, wired to the connector in the same manner.

What this means is that, in terms of supporting features and protocols (e.g., HDCP), all HDMI cables have been designed to the same basic standard, whether they were designed under 1.1 or 1.3a or anything in between, and whether they were tested under CTS 1.1, 1.3b1, or anything in between. A 1.1 certified cable may not be officially (or actually) 1.3 "compliant" in the sense of having passed testing under the 1.3 standards, but it will always be 1.3 compatible, in the sense that it is built to handle the same job, and has all the necessary parts, for 1.3.

Good place to buy cables as well.

Here's what I can offer as I have the same TV,

#1. It should not be doing that. I can be standing directly beside my TV and the quality of my view is only hampered by the fact that the widescreen image is maybe an inch in width from that vantage point. I'd seriously consider bringing it back because something is not right. That TV is suppose to have something like a 170-178 degree viewing range.

#2. This seems to be unavoidable. Although, turning "Light Sensor" off under the TV "General" menu helps quite a bit.

#3. This setting is fairly useless at the moment as far as I know. I have left my "Colour Space" settings on Normal and I am very happy.

#4. Is there really going to be a noticeable difference? Honestly?

#5. This sounds like either a contrast, tint, or colour issue. If it can't be fixed by the calibration settings then, in conjunction with #1, it may have something to do with the mechanics of the TV itself. Something may have shifted in its transportation.

#6. Hypnosis... have the one administering the hypnotic state program her to want to buy a Blu-ray everytime she hears a certain uncommon word. Whenever you want to buy a Blu-ray just slip that activation word into your sentence and... voila! She'll be making suggestions as to which Blu-ray you should buy.
