I would like to see the BLU-RAY and HD-DVD camp release a $200-$300 read only drive with no writing. Some people are interested in just watching movies on their PC and not ready for a burning HDTV home videos. For several years computers had read only CD-ROM and read only DVD-ROM drives and if someone wanted a burner they bought a second drive.
Also a $400-$500 read only dual format BLU-RAY and HD-DVD drive for computers would be attractive for someone that just wants to watch movies on their PC in 1080P. Then again if Universal would just release in BLU-RAY the format war would be over and we would not need universal players or universal computer drives. |

See this thread: New Pioneer 5x BD-ROM drive
That's a BD-ROM/DVD burner combo. I could see that dropping below $300 fairly quickly. DVD burning is hardly an expensive feature. Gary |

My point is that the Industry releases burners only on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray. A read only drive will always be cheaper. A Blu-ray read only drive for $150 would be very attractive.
I would just like to see a cheap read only drive and then later purchase a expensive $500-$1000 burner. |

Gary I am Glad Pioneer is releasing a Blu-ray read only with a DVD burner combo. The thing is people already own $30-$40 burners that burn DVD’s at 20X speed and CD’s at 48X speed. I would not use the Pioneer 5X Blu-ray drive as a DVD burner since a $30 dedicated DVD burner would be better quality for DVD's.
If the industry would make two types of Blu-ray drives I think it would be more popular and easier to understand for the average consumer. 1. A low cost Read only BD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and CD-ROM 2. A Blu-ray burner, DVD burner, and CD burner. Last edited by HDTV1080P; 01-18-2007 at 03:55 PM. Reason: grammer |
