Onkyo 605 and DirecTv HD box question

I got everything hooked up last week with much help from everyone here. I have noticed that my DirecTv HD box going thru HDMI to the Onkyo 605 doesn't seem as loud and as crisp as a Bluray movie does. Of course I realize sound from a Bluray with all the bells and whistles will sound better, but there is a great differance between the sound now and the sound I had from my old Sony receiver and the DTV box hooked up thru Optical. Does this sound like a setting somewhere or should I just hook up an Optical cable for sound and use HDMI for picture ?

try it out...see how you like it. Couldn't hurt, cable audio is either stereo and rare occasion dolby 5.1...but no where near HD audio. Optical would be fine.
