Pale Rider is Clint Eastwood's best western since "The Man With No Name" trilogy! I can't wait for this one!

The image has both good and poor features mostly relatable to the film itself which was shot in Columbia State Historic Park California and Sawtooth National Recreation Area, Idaho. The vistas are, at times, breathtaking. A negative, in my opinion, is the manner in which the film was shot - or rather the time of day. Bright sunlight obscures facial details in many instances - of course, Ebert and other critics note that this was intentional. We can't often see eyes under hat brims (both male and female characters) and this juxtaposes the brilliance of the landscape. It also reflects to some degree on the 1080P transferred image which, in those instances, never seems to capitalize on the pristine quality it could present. Regardless, when detail is visible, it is strong. Noise exists but is very fine and appears as good grain - a nice touch for such a retro-western film. I wouldn't say this Blu-ray is of demo quality for the image but is consistently strong - and far superior to the old SD-DVD. Colors are bright and true - a shade saturated - while overall the image is clean and smooth - typical of a well rendered high-definition Blu-ray. Technically, just, single-layered (the feature takes up over 23.7 Gig), and is encoded using AVC-1. I don't see evidence of any DNR filters or edge enhancements. I hope the large screen grabs can give you a good idea of how it will perform on your system. There is really nothing to overly fault - it's very impressive.

Check avsforum.com under blu ray software. Some discussion about the quality is there. If you like this movie, buy it.

Man, after Tightrope and now watching this I am starting to think Eastwood really hates lighting indoor scenes in any way whatsoever.

Also this movie is pretty bottom-tier Eastwood.

Just getting around to watching this tonight. PQ is pretty good overall. Like reviewers have said the color seems to be oversaturated and some scenes look better than others but it's better than the DVD.

The thing that bothered me is that in most of the dark interior scenes I had wide bands of cloudy white or green light down both sides of the screen. I don't know if this is my TV or the movie.

It's an OK Clint movie. Basically just a reworking of Shane. Not one of my favorite Clint movies.

Clint did this thing so much better in High Plains Drifter. I bought it just for the sake of completion (it was $8 so no big loss!).

I also noticed when watching this that in the trees in the background in some shots there was some weird wobbling effect going on. I don't have the technical expertise to describe what it is, but it was very distracting. Anyone else notice this?

Haters gonna hate.

I saw Pale Rider when I was a freshman in high school, and it was one of my early introductions to Clint Eastwood's westerns. In fact, it was only the third western of his that I had seen after The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and The Outlaw Josey Wales.

I'll be the first to say that this film “pales” in comparison to those others, but I also think that it's quite the awesome 1980s action/western film, and I've always loved the touch of mystique that it offers by way of one particular story element involving the preacher.

I had the biggest crush on Sydney Penny (Megan) when I first saw this movie, partly because she looked exactly...and I mean exactly...like this girl, Christy, who was a junior at my high school while I was a freshman. Christy was the best-looking girl in our entire school, and, naturally, being a couple of years younger than her, I was too shy and intimidated to approach her. One day, however, she passed by me in the school hallway between classes and gave me this wonderfully radiant smile. I spent the rest of that day on cloud nine, and, truth be told, I've actually spent every day since then on cloud nine.

I really ought to pull this Blu-ray out of my still-unwatched stack and revisit the movie. I'll wait until November, though, because this is not exactly a Halloween season film. ....or is it? Hmmmm “Preacherrrrrr..... Preacherrrrr....”

I think he basically hates anything that takes more than 20 minutes to set up.

The HDR on Unforgiven makes every interior look like the fire-lit black hole it is.

Unbelievable that there is apparently no soundtrack available for Pale Rider. I was watching PR on cable tonight and thought I'd pick up the soundtrack. I looked everywhere and cannot find it. Does anybody know if this is true or not?
