My TV is capable of playing 1080i and many HD television programs do come in in 1080i. Upon setting up my Blu-Ray player, it's playing everything in 720p. I go into the setup menu of the player and the option to set it to 1080i is darkened and i cannot set it to that. I am connected via an HDMI cable. I understand that there may not be much difference, and perhaps 720p is even better, but why can't i set it to 1080i?

Are you sure it's capable of displaying a 1080i signal or just capable of accepting one? There is a difference. I'm guessing it just accepts it and converts it to 720p. However... you'd think the player would still show 1080i as a choice.
As stated- what kind of TV/BD player and model #'s? |

The TV is a Digital Research DLCD32 and the website says it: "...supports 720p and 1080i allowing you to enjoy HD broadcasting in either format." This TV is a pretty inexpensive one from Cost-co. My Blu-ray player is the Insignia NS-BRDVD from Best Buy. I was unaware of your distinction about displaying versus accepting 1080i. As you can see I buy cheap equipment and don't know a whole lot about this stuff so my apologies for cluttering your forum, but thanks for any help you can offer. It just seems that 1080i should be an option on the Blu-Ray player. All resolutions are listed, but only some are highlighted and those are the only ones I can choose, 1080i is not highlighted.
Thanks again for your time! |

Your display is a 768p LCD. It's not 720p or 1080i. LCD's are fixed pixel displays. Your display will upscale or downscale to 1366x768p. Most LCD's and plasmas in the wild are this resolution. It has nothing to do with being cheap. You just didn't know. Now you do.
http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/778849/ Your Blu-Ray player is I believe a Funai clone like the Magnavox and Sylvania players. I'm not sure why you can't output 1080i. You should be able to hit the HDMI button on the Insignia's remote to change the resolution to 480i/p, 720p, 1080i/p. |

Thanks everyone, I have tried changing it and it just toggles back and forth between 480p and 720p. I'll just stop worrying about it and be happy with the 720p. It looks great, I was just worried that I may be missing out on a bit more.
