Default Question about 720p TV displaying in 1080p

Went over to my friends house this weekend and when he put a blu movie in his PS3 his TVinfo said it was displaying in 1080p...I know he has a 720p becuase i was with him when he bought it..My question is since his TV doesn't support 1080p, does it hurt or help the picutre if the PS3 is trying to display at 1080p on a 720p TV?

It does not hurt the picture, the tv is just letting you know what it is being sent.
