a few months ago, I had a 6GB *.m2t video file. it was a HDV video that
I shot at a birthday party. I couldn't copy it on a FAT32-formatted ext hard drive and hook it up to my PS3, so I burned the file on a DVD-DL. I inserted the DVD-DL and copied the 6GB file to the PS3's internal hard drive. unfortunately, I lost the original file on my PC and I no longer have that DVD-DL. it now only resides on the internal hard drive inside my PS3... is there a way to copy that file to another device? ext hard drive won't work, because of the 4GB limit... ![]() |

Well some ideas for you.
1. Try reversing it using a media server. 2. I dunno what filesystem the ps3 uses, but if you had a memory stick that was formated the same, maybe maybe maybe... 3. Try uploading it to a website... Thats all that comes to my mind ![]() |

oh wow, how'd you get it in there in hte first place? it would usually give the finger or not show u anything over 3.99GB anyway.
i guess if the xmb isn't showing you the file, you could mount that hard drive onto a running computer and extract it that way... an 8 GB SD card maybe? |

the ps3 does not quite have those limitations, the ps3 does not like ntfs since its microsofts baby. |

size limit) I popped the DVD-DL into the PS3. The file was copied from the DVD-DL to the PS3's internal hard drive. Like I said, the problem now is that I no longer have the original file on my PC... and the burned DVD-DL is also missing... |

I have the same issue with a 5gb file, burnt it to a DL dvd copied to PS3, now I cant get it back off the Ps3. I have been hoping for a firmware update that will allow the PS3 support other types of partitions for external media to enable us to copy these trapped files off our system. They should atleast prevent users from getting stuck in this situation.

A memory stick would not go past 4 Gigs due to the filing system (FAT32). Uploading to a website seems to be the only solution then downloading to whatever other media you had in mind. Wait, isn't it possible to just burn the stuff on a double layer DVD with the PS3 ? If not, here is an idea for a future firmware upgrade. |

i didn't mention anything about NTFS... |

Forgive me if i'm wrong but Can't you just attach a big enough flash drive, then go to the file(highlight it i guess) hit the triangle button which brings up a menu of options on the right (like file info) and select copy and then it will ask you where you want to copy the file to? I did that with my Super stardust HD save file to transfer it to my other ps3.

I think you already smoked too much.
The OP said that he/she burned a 6GB file - not FILES - onto a dual-layer DVD so that he/she can watch it on the PS3. The reason for the DVD is that USB flashdrives are in FAT32 format; the 6GB exceeds the FAT32 specs of maximum FILE capacity. The reason why the file could be transfered to the PS3 was because DVD uses UDF, which can exceed 4GB. The reason the file is in the PS3's internal HDD is because it's not NTFS but a proprietary SCE format. And the reason that it cannot be transferred out using a USB flashdrive is because - again - it is in FAT32. Quote:
Backing up won't work because the ENTIRE DRIVE will be backed up. Quote:
If SCE can make an ap for the PS3 to burn "allowed files" onto an external DVD, that would be great. But it's usefulness would be very limited as it involves large files that were already owned by the owner anyway. fuad |

No the backup is a series ~4GB dat files .. It's likely compressed (zipped style) files that groups the original files inside the dat and splits them across dat file boundaries to create the smallest backup set possible.

I forgot about the FAT 32 file size limitation, but I have to more suggestions:
1) The ps3 has an internet browser built in right, so what if you signed up for a trial of one of those online storage services and log into it from the ps3 and then copy the file from the ps3 to an the online storage site, then log into the storage site from the pc and copy back to the local hard drive? I don't know if this would work as i don't know if the ps3 browser can see files on the ps3 HDD, hopefully someone on this site does know. ![]() 2) This one is gunna be work intensive. First i asume you have your ps3 hooked up via HDMI, what if you get a DVD recorder ment for the recording TV, then run your ps3 throught the DVD recorder via a component cable, hit record on the recorder and play the video on the ps3 all the way through. Once done, have the DVD recorder finalize the DVD (it should make it playable in any DVD player) and take it to your computer and rip it to the hard drive (there are free rippers on the internet i.e. handbreak for mac). The quality might suffer a little but at least you would have a copy of the file. Also I'm not 100% sure this will work as I don't exactly know how the copy protection works on ps3, but since its a home shot video i don't see why a DVD recorder would have issues recording it. ![]() Well i hope this helps. ![]() |
