Default PSN matches Xbox Live user base

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/11/19/...ive-user-base/

Yes its finally happened. What Microsoft did in 6 years, Sony did it in 2. This may be because there are multiple accounts on some machines, but this is still a bid day for Sony.

I think around Febuary (month I signed up), there was like under 3 million signed up to PSN. Now, in less than a year, there was just a huge spike.

I currently have 3 PSN accounts that I use for various reasons. Would that be included? I think the results are pretty skewed as people can just create as many accounts as they want to because they are free. Compared to XBL as you need to pay for them. I know what you mean as its showing progress with the PS3, but we just aren't comparing apples to apples here.

xbl accounts are free. You have to pay to play online.

Yeah and now multiply that number by $50 and that's how many more millions of dollars MS gets to spend on servers than Sony. And I think it can't be argued who's servers are better. Myself on the otherhand, I like free.

However, one console can have more than one XBL account. My friends have 6 on one console. However, those are 6 unique people compared to one person with 6 accounts. Either way that's $300/yr more for MS than for Sony.

EDIT: Also, it's a lot easier to connect to the internet on the PS3 in a wireless house - we don't have to spend $100 on an overpriced addon!

of course they caught them, it's free.....

BTW, I didn't think xbox discussions were allowed.... "NO Xbox discussions" is posted clearly on the main page.

Silver Accounts are free. Gold accounts are needed to play in Ranked games. This was recently changed. Most people though care about ranking and will pay the money.

I'm suprised it took so long, anyone with a PS3 can open a PS3 account. I have 2 US and one EU.

Shouldn't the number of PSN accounts match the number of PS3's sold at the very least?

Thats my bad as I'm not up to speed on XBox affairs. Anyway, I just assumed if you needed to pay to use an account, you would have to pay to get it. Anyway, like someone else stated, we shouldn't discuss the X-Box.

Well Thats primarliy because, if not mistaken, PSN account is free right??? Thats the only thing wrong with Microsoft you have to pay for the memberships. Yes I am an X-Box fan, but I think the one place playstation has always excelled in back to PS2 is free online gaming. Im stuck in the middle now, the misses is going to get me a gift. Either its a PS3 or X-Box 360, Peronally I love the 360, but i also need another blu ray player for my lg lcd i nmy bedroom, but the price point is so expensive for the 80gb 399.99, when the 60gb xbox 360 is 299.99 pluse 4 free games on Black Friday. Im caught in the middle guys, maybe, I might just get both. lol we will see

Sorry, I forgot. Shin Ra, any chance you can move it to off topic?

Not only are silver accounts free, but at least at one time MS was giving a free month of Gold with a new silver account. I know for a fact my brother used this a number of times. This would bloat MS's numbers just as much as Sony's.

Nobody knows where they spend that money except MS. Also 360 servers are P2P (client) so the "dedicated" game servers are really physically dedicated .. but the software that runs on them isn't. PSN supports P2P as well .. plus Dedicated (no host) and Dedicated (with host) and they can be mixed for specific scenarios (like close hand to hand combat) in the same game. The differences have to do with where the game state is maintained.

I can but I won't .. but see the above for some insight why 32 players are common on PSN and 60-player is now in the mix.

We have 6 unique people as well .. for each member of our family. With different tastes in games. No $300/year for us either. It's a zero sum game .. people have so much disposable income..we just get to spend that $300 every year on content instead .. so Sony still got our money and we got something as well. Win Win.
