Default Holy Cow! Actually Seeing Blu-Ray Vs. DVD At Home

Hey guys,

I have a Sony Bravia 40" XBR 1080p 120Hz LCD and PS3 for Blu-Ray.

I can tell the difference between the image quality from Blu-Ray to DVD. But to actually run a test was crazy.

I just bought Ratatouille on Blu-Ray and also had it on DVD. So, I loaded the Blu-Ray on PS3 and the DVD on X-Box 360.

Switching to the exact same scene on both formats - Unreal... you can barely see the whiskers and extra hairs on the rats on DVD.

Like I said, I knew there was a huge difference, but to actually run a test was cool... DVD looks like garbage when comparing it.

lol..Welcome to Blu-ray!

I had to show my dad a side by side comparison to push him over the edge.

^Yep! I am still amazed at all the people who say they can't really see a difference or that dvd is good enough. They are crazy! I can't even stand to watch dvd's anymore and that even includes my favorites such as Star Wars trilogies. Blu-ray is so awesome.

Do you have a newer model Xbox 360? Because the older ones didn't upscale dvd's without the HD DVD add on. The difference between Blu-ray and non-upscaled dvd is huge. But there is still a very significant difference between upscaled vs. blu-ray. You should run a test of both.

Like I said, I knew the difference was huge... but to run my own test was really cool and nerdy for me.

My wife thinks DVD looks fine, so she did not care to see my test.

But my 5 year old daughter thought both looked great...

So, I am all alone in my house enjoying my goofy test.

One thing about your test though is that the 360's DVD player sucks. At least that is what my experience has been. Not to say there isn't a huge difference between Blu and DVD, but I wouldn't be surprised if the DVD looks better on your PS3 than on the 360. And no, I'm not a PS3 fanboy. I have owned a 360 for almost 2 years and only recently got a PS3 in the last few months.

It's likely an even more dramatic difference if you use something with live action.

Ratatouille was digitially transfered to both DVD and Blu Ray from digital files that were superior to either medium. While the Blu Ray should indeed blow away the DVD, I would think something that came from a film source transfered onto both formats would show an even better difference.

Pixar stuff upconverts really well. (But I'll be replacing all my Pixar DVDs with Blu Rays as soon as I have the chance.)

Cars was the first time I had the same movie on both formats to compare, and I was pretty impressed. I wasn't really expecting that much of a difference, but was fascinated by the detail on McQueen's tires. Unfortunately I did the comparison while sitting 1 foot away from the TV, so it was easier to see the differences. I figured had I been back on my couch where I normally watch movies from, I wouldn't have noticed much of a difference.

So a few weeks later I was watching Casino Royale, and decided to put my glasses on (I don't regularly wear them, but have a few pairs that I used during college, so I could sit in the back of the class, but still read the slides/chalkboards). That made quite a difference, so I'm not surprised that several eyewear companies have been hopping on the HD bandwagon, to try to sell people more glasses.

Also the bigger the screen the more striking the difference.

That's what I did. I cant watch a bluray without my glasses now. It looks even better.

People who says there isnt a difference are just normally jealous that you have something better than them. There is quite clearly a difference and I will never go back to DVD.

Cheers

That's a big plus that most people dont get. Once you start to go from 50" and up, SD content does not look pretty at all without all the digital help. Thank god Blu-ray came out.

If you guys look at the viewing distance for HDTV, most are for 1080/720 signals. Feed it and SD signal you have to almost double that distance so it wont look like poop.

Welcome to the world of blu! Enjoy, there's several titles like what you mentioned. If you think there's a difference on Ratatouille, check out blade runner or 2001

people that cant see a difference between the two formats needs to get thier eyes checked out. For some its like they almost dont want to see so they dont feel the need to improve thier movie collection cause they cant afford to or just want to shat on someone elses parade.

I just recently purchased the Leon ultimate edition steelbook from Germany and I decided to show my fiance the difference between my old DVD (upscaled and all) and the blu ray. As a blu ray fan for a while now even I was shocked to see a great transfer side by side but she was pretty amazed also. I basically paused both movies at the scene where Gary Oldman enters Mathildas apt. with a shotgun. Depth, vibrancy, resolution, colour clarity all top quality on blu. I think I've made her see the light
