Just wondering if any of you guys have been having this issue with your Onkyo 806. It occurs when attempting to pass a 1080p signal through the amp. The end return is during dark displays (black sections, ex. PS3 menu) you get blue flickering dots. I'm ordering one soon and don't want this issue when I upgrade to a 1080p set. However, those who are stuck with this reciever, apparently there is a fix for it now. It's a hardware mod, you send your Onkyo in for about two weeks turn around time, and it should solve the issue. I'm not exactly sure where to do this...maybe Onkyo support online. They SHOULD know about this, as our buddies over in the UK are starting to get there mods flowing. Also, serial numbers ending in "G" should be free of this problem, as this is the first factory batch that has the corrected HARDWARE mod in it. Not sure, but you could try to verify this on your own Onkyo. Also, it's a bit early for me, and I have school tomorrow, and most of this information came from AVforums in the UK. So that "G" might or might not be irrelevant....can't type.
Let me know what you guys think. |

Good info to know. I'll check my serial num tomorrow. I've actually tried different things to get blue dots to appear, but never seemed to work. I've had mine since mid Dec and never encountered any issues. |

As some added Info, Found a Onkyo 805 "used like new". Hope nothing is wrong with it except cosmetic(that can be fixed). If there is something wrong, after many weeks of research and deal shopping, I'll still end up getting the 806.
Turns out that it has nothing to do with the upconvert chips or the DCDi(spelling) chips. It's all in the HDMI motherboard. I haven't checked into it, but Onkyo support in Europe will replace the HDMI motherboard which should solve the issues. Hence the Hardware Mod. I don't know if this pertains to just Europe, or if you can infact have the same thing done here in the states. It's nice to know that Onkyo has acknowledged the problem in any case. If you do happen to find any information on this, just PM me please, or just post on this thread. I think many would like to know if this would work out in the States, as the 806 is still a decent AVR for the money. Turn around time in Europe is two weeks, although I'm sure it would be longer than that regardless of country. "pray that my 805 is fine" |

After buying my 806, I found this issue mentioned here, and on various other forums. I was using my old 720p at the time, and was dreading the blue dots when I upgraded to 1080p.
Well, I just got my new 1080p projector all set up and running, and was relieved not to have had any issues watching 1080p blu-rays. Today however, I ran my HTPC through a DVI-HDMI cable into another input, and was greeted with a bazillion dancing blue dots... ![]() I first tried the Through "fix" and turned off Noise Reduction, but that didnt work. I was starting to get worried, until I found the suggestion to turn off Immediate OSD display. This seems to have worked *phew* Just as well I guess, since I find the OSD of volume, etc annoying. If it hadn't worked, I guess I would have started the fight to get it serviced. I'll keep an eye on the situation, and post again if it comes back. ![]() |

Has anyone in the US had theirs serviced to fix the HDMI board issue?
I am really interested in this receiver, but won't buy it if it can't be fixed easily. I do like the OSD since my gear is in another room and I use an IR repeater for my current Onkyo 702. |

For those of you who are are scared of picking up the TX-SR806, don't be (U.S. Customers)! Here's my long story made short...
Dec 25th - Got my TX-SR806 from Amazon... Blue pixel problem, send it back 3 weeks later after no remedy was found. Jan - Got the Denon AVR-2309CI and the AVR-2809CI to find out that they work wonderful... unless you have a Sony KDL TV. The picture and sound drops out about an average of once or twice an hour (can be googled). Returned back to Ultimate Electronics & 6th Ave respectively. Feb 4 - Received my TX-SR806 from 6th Ave (Just hooked it up and calibrating it as I type this). Serial number on back has a sticker with an S over the previous letter (unknown). Turned on 1080p upscaling, tried PS3 games, and everything. No blue pixels!!! Even with Immediate OSD turned on and noise reduction on!!! I'll post pictures of the sticker on my serial number soon. |

Well my 805 came last week and runs like a dream. And I can hear the difference in the wattage compared to the 806 I auditioned at my local HT shop. That lip sync issue isn't as bad as I thought, but it doesn't bother me. I'm not sure if the 706 has the same issues, but something in the back of my head tells me it does. Might want to do some forum search.
So it is clear that SERIAL NUMBER does play a role in this like I speculated (e.g. Europe - Serial numbers ending in the letter "G" and after don't have this problem.) So I would say that it's safe to say that Serial numbers ending in S in the states don't have the problem. Obviously with PootieThang, the serial number reflects a change of some sort and has no blue dots. Looks like almost a year after it's release, they've finally worked out that bug. Anyone who has a Onkyo806 and no blue dots running 1080p, it would be great if you post your serial number and when you got it. Keep me posted Pootie. |

Does anyone have an 806 and a PS3 doing HDMI pass through to a DVI display?
I've been having a great chat with C_Doc as we had similar configurations, but he had handshake problems with his display from a stand alone blu-ray player. I have a Sanyo PLV-Z2 (720p/1080i via DVI) and would love to get an 806 - this thread has given me more confidence on the blue dot problem, but if I can only use HDMI to DVI from the PS3 and use optical out for audio - I might as well keep using my old 702 for now. C_Doc - thanks for all the tips! |
