the ps3 cannot bitstream. it decodes dolby true hd and dts hd ma internally. some would prefer letting their receiver do the decoding.

It's the best for me. I use wonder about letting the receiver do the decoding instead of the PS3, but it should be the same regardless.

If it's not the same letting 1 product do it compared to another product, then is that really bit for bit transfer?

If I were to buy the best Bluray on the market now and use Bitstream on a 806, would the sound be better than the PS3, LPCM on the 806?

Bitstream is the best way to go for TrueHd. You are getting the audio in it's purest form. So the signal does not need to be converted to PCM. That's why they call it TrueHd because you are getting a True signal.

...except once its "decoded" in the receiver, it is converted back into its original PCM format.

Dolby TrueHD and Dts-HD MA are encodes, basically to compress the PCM audio (Losslessly)...then uncompressed inside the player/receiver back into PCM.

So to say TrueHD is a "True" signal because its not converted into PCM, is wrong...because its all PCM to begin with.

Everyone has his or her own preference on either having the player or receiver do the decoding. For me, I really prefer the audio decoding done by the PS3. It not only decodes all lossless formats, but it's also a great music disc player, upsampling CDs and SACDs to 176.4 kHz / 24 bit. Discs sound really smooth and detailed through the PS3, and there is great bass response as well.

I've spent way to much time reading about "what should decode your audio", and it seemed the majority of what I read was leaning towards letting your disc player to the decoding. The difference mabe nill, but who really knows? I doubt your ears would know the difference.

I have a ps3, a standalone blu-ray player & an hd-dvd player and i'll tell you that i prefer to have my signal bitstreamed and have my receiver do the decoding. it sounds better and has more punch than the ps3 does. in fact, i have to turn my volume up quite a bit to get the same umph that bitstreaming gives me. mind you, these are my ears talking and of course seeing that receiver light up doesn't hurt either! I'm not saying that the ps3 sounds bad, i'm saying i prefer my receiver to do the decoding.

It's the combined effort, that's the solution. I would rather have a PS3 going through an Anthem HDMI Prepro and Mark Levinson amps output to Wilson speakers than to have a Pioneer Elite BD output to x-brand receiver to Teac speakers. In the same vein I would rather have that same pioneer Elite in the Wilson system than the PS3 due to its other options. Its the total system that you should consider my friend

I have never been able to get any of the lossless sounds through the receiver from any PS3 via 1.3 HDMI. Only the stand alone blu ray players can display true hd or dts-hd displayed on my receiver. Using an optical cable from the PS3 to the receiver for some reason makes sound better.

So who has a PS3 and a stand alone Blu ray player? I would love to hear some comments on the differences.

You will never "see" TrueHD and DTS-HD Master audio displayed on the receiver with a PS3 because it internally decodes it and sends it out as LPCM via HDMI. If you have your PS3 set to PCM, you are getting the decode TrueHD or DTS-HD Master audio - you just won't see the indicator lights on your receiver - it will only indicate PCM. What are you using as a system (receiver, speakers ect)?

Information on an SACD is at 2.8MHz, so resampling it to 176.4 kHz actually loses information, or downsamples it.

Granted the PS3's performance is still better than most SACD standalone players for PCM output as they output at 24/88.2, but a true DSD stream out (Pioneer Elite DV-48 and up, Oppo 980H, etc.) is the best way to go.

CD playback at 176.4 though is definitely a much smoother sound and I've begun relistening to older CD's I haven't listened to in years just because of how good the PS3 is.
