I hope all works out for this guy... My very, very last resort if I was him. Would be walking in there and grabbing the hard drive and walking out... But try all legal means deemed necessary first. But sometimes that will get you no where and you need to take matters in your hand to get your money's worth.

10:21 AM on Mon Oct 29 2007 So, if someone else that DIDN'T work for BB came up to you in the store and said "Tough Shit, you can't have this drive, it's mine" what would you have done? Called the cops.

I agree with that 100% if a manager comes up and takes something away from me after I pay for it, and says take it up with the manufacturer,

Im going to be taking it up with the police

Default Best rule of thumb!

1) Count your change when handed to you.
2) check your receipt for any overcharges.
3) open package before leaving store especially used/returned items.
4) always ask/get a receipt.

Or else have fun with the headaches. Customer beware. Businesses #1 priority are themselves, not YOU!

Without admitting any guilt (because I'm an innocent guy) I can say for sure that not all Wal-Marts open every box. I think it depends on the store, and how much the employees feel like following the rules.

Ohhhh, that's why I absolutely HATE Best Buy... because similar happened to me!!!

I bought a new graphics card (AGP). Took it home, unpacked it, got the computer ready for the upgrade only to find out its a PCI-E card in the box, which states it is an AGP card!

Put it back, grab the receipt, back to the store the next morning. Tell the sales guy what happened, he said to go to the Geek Squad to have it checked.
They are telling me that I pretty much lie to them, because I am trying to return a card that is different than the box says! DUH!!!
The card is brand new as you can see from its connectors as well...
Ask for the store manager, who told me the same and that I have to contacted the manufacturer as they cannot take it back because its a wrong item!

I immediately called their corporate office who gave us the hardest time to get this settled only to tell us in the end it is their policy not to take it back and we have to talk to the manufacturer.

So in good faith I call the manufacturer (BFG) who said if I send in the card I will get back the exact same card that I am sending in and not the one that the box says!

$350 gone

Contacted BBB and local consumer affairs, who in return can only do light follow ups because it is being considered a minor purchase!
They told me I better hold on to the card for about 3-6 months as well as all the paperwork that needs filing will take time.

Well after 6 months and no resolution I was able to sell it for $200!

Never ever bought anything from Best Buy again and they surely will not get my business ever!

Did you try take it back to another best buy and act clueless? Just act like it does not work and play the stupid card... It does work and in the case about returning electronics, it's the best way. Yes, I know you can see the difference between AGP and PCI-E.

Edit: Yes, I read everything you said. But still, did you try? I know you sold it...

No, because at the time there was only one Best Buy over here. There are 2 now as far as I know. But I would have done so, if the 2nd one was around back then.

even if they open the box, they don't always know what their looking at. or there are components missing. i returned a ps3 to wal-mart once and they only looked to see if the ps3 was in there. i could have easily kept the controller or anything else included.

The main thing that made me angry the most is not the fact that it was the wrong product in there... its the way they handled the situation, assuming from the get go that we are trying to screw them over! And saying so right in our faces!
I know they are a big company and all, but they lost a shitload of money that I would have been spending there for new HT, computer parts, BDs on a weekly basis etc...

Hey, they lost my business a long time ago. Walmart, same for them. I just screw them slowly, every chance I get.

On a side note

I do not know why people would even buy computer parts from bestbuy, unless you needed it right then and there, and couldnt wait for UPS

Tigerdirect.com Has 100X better Cs, and better prices
