Default Audio from PS3 to reciever

I own a yamaha HTR 6130 reciever with a yamaha speaker package that came with it. The HTR 6130 decodes dolby digital and dts, basic stuff. I have a PS3 hooked up to it. the only problem is that you have to run an optical to the reciever if you are using HDMI, which I am. this system is installed in my apartment, but at my parents house we have a yamaha RX-V663 that decodes everything. it's hooked up to do 7:1, but when it decodes it's usually 5:1. when I was at my parents house i hooked up a sony blu-ray player, a S350, and it decodes the highest level of audio straight to the reciever. my playstation will do this too, but at my apartment all I can get out of it is dolby digital. I watch a lot of blu-rays so I pay for the high quality sound that accompanies the picture. what i'm wondering is what setting do I have to have the system in my apartment so that the PS3 does the decoding and sends it out the highest quality audio to the reciever?

HDMI to reciever and then to the TV?? Optical will only get you to DD and DTS and at best 2.0 uncompressed PCM

so you're saying that without HDMI there's no way im going to get Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD? if this is the case then i might as well get a different reciever. there's no way that I can get the PS3 to decode the sound and send it already decoded to the reciever? the reciever has a straight setting where it puts out whatever is put into it. I was wondering if I could get the PS3 to do the decoding and run it straight into the reciever.

You'll need a receiver capable of receiving Linear PCM Through HDMI. Even thought your PS3 decodes it, an optical cable will only get you the core track and not the lossless track.
So your best choice is to set it to Bitstream if your using optical.

HOW TO GET: Uncompressed PCM, Dolby TrueHD & Dts-HD MASTER Audio

Onkyo 606 if you're on a budget.

Ok, I think your reciever has HDMI inputs. Not sure if it take LPCM, but it doesn't hurt to try. All you'll need is a HDMI cable from your ps3 to your reciever and then a second HDMI cable from your reciever to your tv.

So knowing that the PS3 does the decoding for you and sends it out as LPCM and not bitstream, your already closer to understanding the next part. Go into your PS3 menu settings for audio. Go to Audio output and select HDMI out and run a auto config. This will select all the sample bit rates your reciever can accept. Then from there, see if you can run DTHD or DTS-MA out in a movie to your reciever. If you can't

I second that Onkyo 606. amazon my friend.

the problem is that the optical audio cable is only capable of carrying 2 channel HD audio so in order for you to get the 5.1 channel HD sound you so crave, you're gonna need a new receiver and yes i think the onkyo 606 is a good one and i've also heard that yamaha makes a few good HDMI equiped receivers as well

For your apartment setup you'll need to continue using the optical cable. The best you'll get is DTS core tracks and Dolby Digital. Your receiver, albeit good sounding for the price, does not process audio via HDMI.

I'd suggest saving up for a Yamaha 663 (HTR 6160) to replace your 6130 in order to have lossless audio. You can find the 663 online for around $359.
