Default Netflix Heralds 700K Blu-ray Subs

Haven't seen this posted, yet-

Quote:
Netflix’s decision last year to add a $1 surcharge to monthly subscribers of Blu-ray Disc movies continues to pay dividends.

The Los Gatos, Calif.-based online DVD rental pioneer said it ended the fourth quarter (ended Dec. 31) with 700,000 specific Blu-ray subscribers — up 200,000 from its year-end goal.

CEO Reed Hastings, in a call with investors, said Netflix remained committed to the next-generation packaged media format and was “on par” in terms of where the trends have been over the past couple of years.

At first skeptical of Blu-ray’s market durability, Hastings said the format has proven to be stronger than DVD during its initial rollout. The executive said the service has applied lessons learned from the early days of DVD to Blu-ray distribution.

“We’re much smarter now, so we’re further down that [learning] curve than we were in DVD at this point in its life,” Hastings said. “If Blu-ray player prices continue to fall as expected, driven by next-generation chip designs, then widespread adoption becomes increasingly likely and it extends the life of disc-based viewing.”

Let's just hope that Netflix will finally start to buy larger quantities so there are fewer issues with long wait times...

+1....may get them by business back again from Blockbuster if they cut those wait times down.

I second that notion, getting tired of the term "very long wait"

I think this is a good sign that Netflix will buy more Blus and cut down the wait time. This company does seem to try to improve themselves. (For instance- improving the streaming movie quality with a firmware update and the addition of streaming HD movies)

Long wait times, an extra dollar...Why would I want to be part of any of that?

Both Netflix and Blockbuster suck for new releases.. can never get one until it is a month old at least. The only thing they are good for is for renting old titles.

This is both good and bad news for Blu-ray. It means there are a lot of potential BD consumers, but the studios would rather have you buy the movie from a store than rent it from Netflix.

The studios should like me. I rent from Netflix and then if I love the movie, and determine I will view it multiple times, I go out and buy it. Last week I got Wanted from Netflix and decided that it was a must own title so I'm gonna pick it up soon.

But yeah, most people will just rent...

I do the same thing as you. I rent first, then if I think I'd ever watch it again (more than once) I'll buy it. I'm on the fence about Wanted. Loved the special effects and Angelina, but it's not really a great movie. The behind the scenes featurettes that show how they did the efffects was interesting too.

I agree Wanted isn't a great movie but I was totally drawn in from the first scene and couldn't turn away. Not a dull moment. Even the wife said she liked it and she hates blood and gore(which this movie had tons of) Reminded me a little of Fight Club as well as the Matrix (love both of them)

Just got an email...Netflix is sending me Igor tomorrow and it was on the wait list, so maybe their blu shipping is picking up.

the only annoying thing is that the 8.7M$ off BD customers is going to subsidizing DL instead of making BD more accessible to their customers.

It seems to have gotten worse since Christmas. Must be all the people who got Blu-ray players signed up for Netflix.

Wonder if they count those that canceled as well but still paid the extra buck for a month or two. I know I'm in that group. The wait was just too long. It was much better when it didn't cost an extra buck. It was like they said "here give us an extra buck and we'll make sure you never get a new release...mmm-kay?"

If they would have us BUY the movie, I suggest they knock the prices down. $30 for a movie is too much. It's hard to justify that price for a single movie. Particularly when people want to build a collection. If they would knock the price back,....say $12 - $15 for SD DVD's,....and $19.95 - $24.95 for Blu-Ray,....they would sell a lot more movies. At $30 each,....I will continue to use Netflix to watch movies,....and then just buy the ones that I consider "keepers".

Now that some players also stream Netflix,.....that even makes it better,...and easier to screen.
