I am new to this forum, and my question is:
Why does it take so long to load a blu-ray disk, before it starts to play? Thanks |

Id say it depends on 3 things.
1-The movie you are playing some have more features then others, meaning more to load. 2-The player you are using, again some are faster then others(PS3 rocks the house). 3-If your have the latest firmware for your player, if your don't have the most update firmware, that COULD be an isue you are facing. Just somthing to think about. ![]() |

My S300, is not known for load speed, even on regular DVDs. Think it has to do with loading Java or BD-Live options, and perhaps slower processors to keep the cost down. Some disks take a couple of minutes - night a the museum, for example. Loading, loading, loading.... Recent firmware updates seem to have helped the speed some, but no spectacular increases. Even so, From what I've read, the S300 is still faster than 1st generation players. My 1st gen PS3, on the other hand, is quite zippy, with almost no delay, regardless of what disk. |

I have a Sony BDP S300 with all the firmware updates installed.
I have not timed it, but last night I was watching "What Just Happened" and the load time seemed about 1 - 2 minutes. I agree with the other posters, there are times when it loads very fast, but other times, it seems to take for ever! I am wondering it it is loading a lot of stuff or what? Thanks everyone for your help and information. |

I have the same player and it does take time to load even with all of the firmware updates. |

Could the long load times -- both in your player and all players in general -- be attributed to the fact that you're loading ~25 GB worth of data? It's just a thought, as I don't technically know the answer. It just makes sense that these first generation Blu players weren't quite made with fast load times in mind; at least not as a primary focus anyway. I'm sure future generation players will come with better processors and so forth.
I'd be willing to bet that a DVD loads much faster than a BD on your system (they DEFINITELY do on mine); hence, the theory of load time length being tied to data amount that is being loaded holds at least some water. |

OK, thanks. I'm just saying this question seems to come up a lot, so perhaps it isn't really being answered clearly enough for those who pose the question to be satisfied with the answer. I just thought I'd put my spin on it.

The technical explanation is that there are essentially 3 ways a disc can be encoded: BDAV mode (simple, DVD like menus, not generally used for commercial movies), BDMV mode ("true" BD-style menus and features), and BDMV mode with BD-J features. Discs making use of BD-J require the player to load a Java VM in which to run the BD-J content. The latest players, PC players, and the PS3 have the processing power to do this very quickly. Older players ran with much slower processors and could take a LONG time to load the Java VM, run the "player speed test" that was included on many BD-J enabled titles, and finally, load and show the BD-J content. It's just FAR more computationally intensive than what other video formats needed previously. Even within the BD-J enabled titles, there's a huge disparity among titles in terms of how difficult their effects are to pull off computationally. Some are fairly simple (such as replacing the player's on screen display when fast-forwarding) and others are FAR more complex (games and menus requiring lighting effects from multiple sources, etc). As the latest players don't struggle as much with the speed, the studios are increasing their use of BD-J considerably to create newer and cooler menus and content on their discs... to the detriment of owners of older stand-alone players. |

The loading times are ingenious developments. They allow you to insert the disk, take a leak, pour a beer and return just in time to watch the trailers. The only load time that is ridiculous is Casino. It took over 5 minutes (even in the PS3), and is a well known issue.

About my "loading 25 GB of data" comment, I was kind of speaking in hyperbole; my main intention with that was to compare it with DVD loading, which is a whole 'nother ball game when it comes to data loading -- that much I DO know (or at least I think I do). FWIW: give me long load times all day long if the resulting output is what blu provides. |
