Default Wrong aspect ratio

I have recently bought a new 42" LCD TV after getting rid of my old 32" LCD.. I dont know the exact model, but think it is a OW42 (made by Philips if im not mistaking, bought it because the company, Outwave, who sold it went bankrupt)

Anyways, whenever I see a movie in 1.85:1 it fills the whole screen and shows no black bars at all! It was the exact same problem with my 32"... Not really a problem for me, but I want to see the movie as it is supposed to be, if you know what I mean!

I just followed this guide to see if it helped, but its the same..

I have tried Predator 1 and 2 and Starship Troopers... Does anyone know why I dont have black bars?

I think this is the first time someone has posted and wondered why there are NO black bars! Very refreshing! You obviously get it!

I'll defer to the experts as to why you are having this problem. Someone will chime in shortly, no doubt.

it's because new TV's are in a widescreen format-- the black bars on
1.85 movies are virtually gone (sometimes you might see just a tiny bit
at the top and bottom" and the 2.35 aspect ratio movies have black bars
that are smaller.

rest assured that you ARE seeing the movie in the correct ratio-- you
might also notice that 1.33 movies will now have black bars on the sides
of the TV...

...it's called overscan.

Some TVs can disable it, but I can't name any. It gets on my nerves too.

I have three Sony's and I cannot see any black bars on the 1.85:1 movies. However, there is hardly any difference between 1.78:1 and 1.85:1 so if I am losing a little bit of the picture because of overscaning it would practically be unnoticable. It's not a concern for me. Now, if I had no black bars on the 2.35:1 films, then that would be a different story.

At least it is not as bad as what Alliance Atlantis did to Se7en they cropped it all to hell and took a 2:35:1 movie and made it 1:78:1 , why in the hell would they do that, did John Doe put them up to it?

Since the 16:9 Tv's today are very close to a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, we can enjoy those movies without black bars and still get the entire picture as the Director intended.

2.35:1 movies will still display with black bars, however they will be smaller.

2.20 and above films WILL STILL HAVE BLACK BARS. Flat movies 1.78-1.85 ratio will fit the entire screen, flat movies should now be called the "new full screen"! 1.33 -1.37(the old full screen or Academy Ratio) ratio films will be pillar boxed(black bars on either side)! One more "Smilebox" ratio looks like a bow tie(i'm serious!) to recreate Cinerama films on a widescreen TV,check out the incredible How "The West Was Won" Blu to experience Smilebox!

Can you post a screen shot of Smilebox? I am having a hard time visualizing it.

Thanks!
