My bet is that Sony bundles this year, and then cuts next year.
A preview just happened this weekend here in Canada. Future Shop sold a PS/3 6-GB + F1 Championship Racing + your choice of POTC I or II for the regular price. The CAD$ has flown recently, which does give Sony Canada some leeway. Gary |

We got an extra 20 gig added to our hard drive.
I predict the price cut will be about 20 dollars. |

A price cut and a new SKU are in order IMO but not at the same time. Price cut first, before Xmas, then a new SKU after called the 'Enthusiast PS3' with a bigger HDD and controversially more XDR, something like 512MB instead of 256MB as this is the single biggest drawback for people putting Linux onto the system. The extra XDR will of course not be available to game developers as it would create a split in the install base.
The new SKU would be priced at current levels as I think that many enthusiasts are willing to pay $600 for a Cell powered Linux workstation, and maybe Sony and Nvidia could remove the Hypervisor as well for the people on the 'enthusiast' box. Sony would make a profit on the hardware and will not need game subsidies for the purchase to make sense so they could remove the hypervisor without it effecting their bottom line too much Last edited by Maximus; 05-28-2007 at 10:33 PM. |

It is part of the reason that I haven't bought in, I want to put Linux on it and I know that 256MB XDR isn't enough. I have no problems with the pricetag, but unless they find a way to put some more system RAM or a way for me to retro-fit some more RAM, I won't buy in. I know many people in this situation, any serious Linux user will tell you that there is no point in having such a great processor if you only have 256MB RAM.
The hypervisor stuff is very wishful thinking. Basically what I was trying to get across is that Sony have to find a way to differentiate a new SKU, making it worth the $599 tag. A bigger HDD alone won't do it. |

I think the price cut will come in the spring of '08 when the gaming market is rather slow. |

going to have to say next year for Christmas. If the price is dropped to quick it just looks like Sony is not selling enough.
It took a while for the ps2 to to drop in price so i decided to see if i could find anything to back up my thoughts on that comment. yes its Wikipedia but its has price history from all other country's also. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_2 * US$299.99 (October 26, 2000, release date) (CAD$449.99) * US$199.99 (May 14, 2002) (CAD$299.99) * US$179.99 (May 13, 2003, "temporary" pricing) (CAD$249.99)[1] * US$179.99 (August 18, 2003, official pricing)[2] * US$149.99 (May 11, 2004) (CAD$179.99) * US$129.99 (April 20, 2006) (CAD$139.99) Last edited by simcal; 05-29-2007 at 12:54 AM. I think another good poll question would be, how much will the price cut be when it does come...
My vote is that since usually Sony makes large first price cuts, the PS3 will be available $499 as is or with more features than currently available. |

I voted by year's end on the condition that the earlier news stories about greater production for blue diodes and other things come true in a timely manner.
I'd like to see $499 for the 60 giger at Christmas. I suspect Gary's scenario several posts up is far and away the more realistic possibility, though. ![]() |
