"Sony says it has signed a $315 million deal to install its digital projectors in all AMC Entertainment theaters. " ... "Theater chains are replacing film projection equipment with digital versions because new technology provides a clearer picture. No film is used, so digital images are devoid of scratches and wobbly images. Distribution costs will also be lower, as studios no longer need to create and distribute reels of film. Rather, movies can be downloaded from a satellite or served to several projectors in one theater from a hard drive." |

Piracy will not go up want to know why? Well because the HDD hold Terabytes of data which take a very long time to transfer. Even getting the movies off the HDD to the servers take several hours. Then after that you have heavy encryption meaning the projectionists would need to know a hacker near by to do it. Your not going to send a hacker Terabytes of of data for them to download now are you? Then after that it will need to be compressed down to atleast 50GB but most "HD" torrents are about 30GB. Then after that you will upload it to the internet and that itself would take a while. And what do you get in return for weeks worth of hard work? NOTHING. So no piracy will not increase.
And to address kaliraver69 question. No Blu-ray versions will not look better then a HDD given to a Digital Cinema. Blu-ray is 1920x1080, 2K Digital Cinema is 2048x1080 and 4K Digital Cinema is 4096×2160. So Blu-rays are basically inferior because of lower resolution and they are compressed compared to Digital Cinemas higher resolution and being uncompressed. |
