Default AMC Theaters to Switch to 'Super HD' 2160p x 4K PROJECTION

"4K digital projection is so sharp and so rock-steady you really see every detail," says Kim Libreri, visual effects supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic. "It doesn't look like movies you've seen in the past. It's got this hyper-real quality."

Nice, there is an AMC in my town.

No mention of when this might roll out.

More excited about this than I am 3-d.

It's just too bad all the AMCs around me are nasty.

The AMC near me is great. Very clean, about 24 screens.....expensive though! But aren't they all.

About time, the last movie I saw at a theater was The Dark Knight and even then I was really unimpressed with the PQ. I kept thinking that I couldn't wait to see it on Blu-ray to see a more detailed version. I just might to head back to an AMC and check out "Super HD".

4k... as in 4000. Currently blu-rays are running at 1080. This would be approximately 4x the resolution of HD. Thanks to film, this is certainly possible and huge screens will be able to take advantage. This is actually a pretty exciting development.

And, apparently, about 2x the current resolution used in the best theaters as they're running 2k.

Where can I find out if the AMC theaters have/will have switched to 4k in my area? Not to mention an approximation of when.

Wow awesome. Thanks for clearing that up for me. Maybe it will be worth the $12 now to go see a movie. Assuming they dont raise prices to cover the cost of this new technology.

Supposedly the theater near me has a few 4k screens. I haven't really looked into it. They're more expensive than other places, but they also have valet parking, a restaurant, and the whole "experience". I dunno if they're charging more for that or the projection system.

4K resolution = 4x 2K resolution - in terms of number of pixels anyway.

Blu-ray=1920x1080
2K digital cinema=2048×1080
4K digital cinema=4096×2160

I'm sure they throw in the extras to justify to the customer for the above average price. The price of the more expensive projection system is most likely included in the ticket price. I would expect the theaters who are getting the new higher resolution projectors to go up in ticket price.

Great News, now maybe I'll start going back the the theatre to see movies again, since I haven't really wanted to since blu-rays, I would rather wait for the superior PQ @ home on blu, not to mention its only $5-7 more (if you wait for sale) to own a movie now since it $10 a ticket(last time I went)

still amazes me that PQ at home is better then theatre, good for us right

i found this web site to see if they had a list of theaters using 4k projection:

http://www.widescreenreview.com/news...l.php?id=18409

then found this:

http://www.3dathome.org/experience-theater.aspx

thought it was pretty cool.

Hm . . . I wonder if they'll raise their already exorbitant prices (in comparison to every other theater in my area) because of this. Might make it worth the current prices, though. Hopefully they upgrade their audio to match.

I wish they would give us a timeline for this, we always go to the AMC that is in our mall. I can't wait until they upgrade because the movies always look like sh*t. There sound is pretty dang good though.

When we had a trial for Digital Cinema for Australia at the cinema I work at the ticket prices remained the same for 35mm, 2K and 4K so if you guys are getting charged more in the states then you're getting ripped off. And experiencing 4K first hand myself and being able to walk right up to the screen I just have to say it's beautiful. The quality is consistent so no scratches on the print etc. , the colours are alot better because with 35mm the ending credits look yellowish compared to 2K,4K Digital Cinema which is actually white, the projectors actually stay in focus alot longer then 35mm. With 35mm projectors by the end of the night the focus isn't as good as it can be and lossless audio!

I know this a thread regarding 4k in movie theaters, and I don't want to hijack the thread. I just wondered if 4k resolution will be the "gold standard" how long will it/could it take to trickle down to HT use? Meaning if blu-ray is 1080p, are it's (blu-ray) days numbered? Will the next generation become 'ultra' blu-ray?

2k and 4k aren't practical for Home use. It is used for theaters because of the screen sizes they have. Most home theaters even the ones where people use projecters and 8ft screens etc don't require 4k. For example if you have a 40" tv or smaller i think it would be very hard to tell the difference between 720p or 1080p unless your a couple feet away from the screen. 2k and 4k is useless on the majority of displays found in most homes. Overkill is the word that would describe it best imo. I think it will be a while before most consumers require something greater then 1080p. Once the 3d stuff starts coming out we might see something.

I use 2k at home. I just shave 0.125K from it and watch it on 5" discs
