Default 2nd Hobbit Movie will not bridge any gaps!!!

http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=24610

check out the above link to get a little bit from the interview w/del toro.

they've decided to span the hobbit out through 2 full movies and not bridge the gap between the hobbit and FOTR.

I do not care, didn't expect them to. Just glad to see one of the best movie franchises of all-time finally getting its long awaited and needed prequel.

That's good, that's the way it should be. It shouldn't be taken with a "George Lucas" perspective of trying to bridge stories together.

Excellent news.

I'm pretty happy about this. The book didn't really bridge a gap either. It just occured prior to the FOTR... I'd imagine the movies ending around when Bilbo finds the ring....

yeah but they haven't even finished writing the damn things yet. then they'll have a year or more of actual shooting. for the people involved, it'll fly by once it gets going but for us fans it's gonna drag on and on.

i'll be almost 30 by the time the 2nd one comes out!!!

Excellent news.
But come on, Tolkien did do a little re-imagining of the Hobbit for the second edition in order for it to lead into the LOTR more conveniently

Ugh! Man I'm getting old.

I wish they would just releasing some of the casting, especially who will be playing Bilbo.

How much story could have happened between the two anyway?

About 50 years pass between the Hobbit and FoTR, if memory serves.

I'm happy that it isn't a bridge as well, as they would probably have to take a lot of creative liberties with that.

As far as the division point between the two movies, I think anywhere from shortly after Bilbo finding the Ring and it's powers (escaping from the Misty Mountains) to the whole party getting through Mirkwood forest would be a good stopping point. My vote would be for right after he escapes the Misty Mountains and meets up with the rest of the group. This way, the beginning of the second one can start off with the tree-escape from the wolves and goblins. (sorry for sounding like an over-excited fan-boy!)

If it's due out in 2011, say Christmas then I'll be 22.

Not filling the gap, leaves room for more movies.

The "bridge" movie idea was nonsense from the outset...the problem I have is that the Hobbit is a fairly quick read, and the idea that its going to be padded out to 4.5 hours to fill two movies fills me with all kinds of King Kong flashbacks. The Rankin/Bass animated film did a more than fair job with the material, and it runs what? 80 minutes? At most? Why do I get the sinking feeling we're going to see backstories for every single one of the dwarves...
