Default PIXAR Possibilities

Everyone here, for the most part, can acknowledge that there is a level of genius at Pixar that has yet to be matched in their niche. A couple things I often ponder about Pixar are...

1. Could/would/should they step outside of their comfort zone? They are masters at the kid targeted, adult pleasing, happy family movie. But we all know that animation can be just as powerfull when telling a story as live action. Waltz with Bashir, Akira, Grave of the Fireflies, Persepolis and Paprika are just a tiny example of what is available. Could Pixar make a serious drama...and should they?

2. Hire more talent damn it. One movie per year isnt cutting it for me. If Pixar could recruit more talent and produce two movies per year, would they lose the magic? Can upper management keep the vibe right if the shop gets too big?

I'd like to see them take a stab at a serious movie and I would love 2 movies per year.

Am I the only one? If you think its a bad idea, please share, and why.

Please discuss.

the storyline of Wall-E was an amazing drama/comedy.

They could easily pull off a serious film.

Part of what makes Pixar's movies what they are is the fact that they release so few, and it creates more demand. It's also kind of a setup for failure, too, because at this pace they must produce a winner or else the whole thing was just a waste.

I would like to see more of them, though, especially now that both of my kids are "of age" and we can all go to the theater together as a family.

Westy, would you want one, and if so, what type would you like to see them tackle first?

Yep. And if they ever release a dud, it would be a whole year for us to wait and give them a second chance. I often wonder if thats a bad plan, to let the taste of a dud linger so long. Hmmmm.

I've read that every feature film Pixar makes is actually R&D for new tech. I also heard that all their teams compete to make shorts, and the most compelling is the one that gets chosen to be remade as a full movie.

To me watchmen shared themes with the incredibles like banning masks/superhero's and showing them in the everyday struggle of living/hiding
but with so many pg-13 x-men,iron man, hulk it'd be awfully tough to compete
in such a saturated market.

I'm sure there will be a incredibles 2 but will it go for the jugular...who knows?

Also i've heard about Monster's 2 but don't expect it anytime soon.

My guess is 2013-2015 as 2010 has toy story 3,2011 is likely incredibles 2 and
2012 is cars 2.

Pixar has done 1 original then a sequil then another original but looks to have sequilitis for some time to come.

The wait begins.

If it aint broke don't fix it.

I think at one point Pixar/Lasseter stated that 1/year is their goal. I really think trying to expand & increase output would be detrimental. The larger anything gets the more difficult it gets to control the quality. As worrisome as 1 dud with their current schedule sounds 2 duds in 1 year sounds much more harmful.

I also don't think they should go into PG13 or further as Pixar. Pixar is a very valuable brand now. If they want to explore more adult themes they need to create a new entity to do it under.

After watching A Pixar Story on Starz I think it is clear that Pixar's company focus is to do one great movie every year. Any more than that and they could see their quality drop. I don't think Disney would want them to try and make a serious movie. They've got a formula that's working now, why change when both the critics and moviegoers love you?

Thats kinda what I assume as well. There is just so much talent there. Big Blue has a point about possibly creating another label. Heck, maybe they dont want to make serious movies because it is more FUN to come to work to make FUN movies

I agree, why rush things out just to make a quick profit. Quality takes time.

Is the general population that goes to movies aware that Pixar produces ~1 movie per year? My guess is no. Hence, I think Pixar could cash in on more than one movie per year at least short term.

Don't know what they could be doing, but we know what they ARE doing:

- Toy Story 3
- Newt
- The Bear and the Bow
- John Carter of Mars (effects?)
- 1910 (effects?)

...Like Disney parks, I say, let the geniuses do their work, and let the fanboys keep hands off. The geniuses come up with more out-there stuff.
