The bully in school who pushes people around has to get detention, suspension, whatever it is to try and get him to set his way straight. With all the money that Downey, Jr. gives to charities and what not too, it seems a little bit ridiculous to be mad he's making money, since he puts so much of it towards helping people. But hey, maybe that's just me.
That is correct. If law abiding citizens don't get these kinds of opportunities then what is the point? I always find prisons far too soft, people should be able to get a second chance but I don't think criminals should be able to just serve their sentence and wash their hands.

And giving charity is fine, but considering the ridiculous money they have earned since they give a very small fraction of it away despite earning far more than they deserve.

You think they just "wash their hands" of it? Are you kidding? Downey, Jr. was barely insurable once he cleaned up. So much so Marvel wasn't even sure they wanted him for Iron Man. But I guess working to clean up, earning people's trust, and dealing with all his own demons enough to finally really care for himself and his family isn't enough for you. You sound like the kind of person who thinks even after it's all said and done, they should sit on the outskirts and watch everyone have better lives, like they don't deserve it. That's insane. Again, people change, you can't just pigeonhole someone because they have a blackspot on their record. That's insane, and completely asinine.

Also, tons of law abiding citizens get the chance. We just had a case in Orange County on Halloween of a hit and run, a guy with a long record, who had been giving more than one chance to clean up, and he still managed to hit and kill people. The courts tried to give him a chance, and he screwed it up. People conveniently forget how lax courts can be since sometimes when they talk about how easy celebrities get off. They don't always get off easy, sometimes they do, but other times they don't. It just depends on the case, just like with normal citizens.

He gives more than just a small fraction of money...He's a big proponent of helping people clean up and have better lives, because he went through it before. He spends a lot of time trying to give to the people who need it, while helping his son who is battling many of the same demons right now. Who are you to judge how much someone should make or not, because of your bias that he did bad things? I'm sorry, but I'd rather someone like Downey, Jr. make his millions, and then use his money for good, then saying he shouldn't have the money to help people like you seem to think.

It's hard to care for the story when the "cleaning up, helping people, trust earning and demon dealing" is done through multi million picture deals. There are thousands of people who put in far more graft than him, help far more people and earn nothing for it and they never went to prison in the first place either. Where is their celebration? And don't get me started on Whalberg, I get no sense of respect from him whatsoever, he flaunts it what he has with arrogance because he knows damn well he doesn't deserve it. Maybe I'd be more forgiving if either were good actors but alas.

You can call me names as much as you like but I answered the thread with my opinion and just because you want to take a moral high ground for some reason - nothing better to do? - doesn't somehow make me wrong or stupid.

Wait...we're the ones trying to stake out some moral high ground?

You can't be serious. You simply can't be.

No one is calling you names dude. At least I didn't. If I did, I'm sorry. Please calm down. You have your opinion of the man, then have it. We have ours. Let's not start a riot here. And as for the moral high ground? I have no such thing. Wahlberg is a human being like me. I am not above him. Or beneath. I don't "celebrate" him. I enjoy the movies I see with him, which aren't very many, but still. Good gracious. This is like if someone said to me "Uh no. You hit your brother in the stomach on the school bus once loud enough that the driver could hear the impact, so you don't deserve to have a full time job with benefits, you should live in the slums."

I didn't see anybody, but any argument should never stoop to name calling. Then it's middle school all over again.

I didn't call you names. I said the idea you were saying was asinine, but that's my opinion. I just think you need to look at the whole picture in your arguments, not cherry pick to try and make yourself right. I didn't call you stupid, just thought you were looking at things the wrong way, and you weren't seeing the whole picture. To each their own, but I won't try to convince you otherwise again, but don't take it as me attacking you and calling you names, because I wasn't intending that. I apologize if you thought that was the case.

Just a thought. Don't kill me please. I consider myself a law-abiding citizen, at least I try to be, I'm not perfect. And I do have those opportunities if I really want to pursue them. That is the Constitutional right of everyone to pursue happiness. Whatever form that takes. Walhberg screwed up. Downey Jr. screwed up. We all screw up. They suffered through their consequences and no doubt they still have it hit them, but I am not going to bring the gavel down on them and say they shouldn't be allowed to have the careers they have. It's not my place to do so. From everything I have read about, and from Wahlberg, he is a man who has indeed made terrible mistakes and paid a price and yet he never once lays blame on anyone else. He doesn't make himself a victim of poor circumstance. He takes responsibly and does the only thing that anyone in the situation can do. Ask for forgiveness. Despite the fact that we aren't the ones he wronged. We don't even know the guy on a personal level. So, again, I refuse to pass judgment and start avoiding his movies because he has a terrible past. As long as he continues to show the respect for the gravity of what he did and doesn't start pointing fingers at anyone else, I'm cool with him. And Downey Jr.
