This time of year, I always like watching Misery and The Shining. The isolated-in-the-mountains setting really ups the suspense and the wintery atmosphere is so palpable you can practically feel the cold weather on your face.
Can anybody recommend similar horror movies? Especially if they are of the slow burn variety, where the suspense gradually boils until finally erupting into full-on terror. |

Cold Prey 1 and 2
Silent Night, Deadly Night The Thing 1982 (and prequel) Dreamcatcher Terror Train 30 Days of Night Dead Snow Ravenous My Little Eye The Last Broadcast Blood Runs Cold just to name a few (I love snowbound horror, even crap like Jack Frost and it's sequel) |

A few slow burn winter horrors I'd highly recommend that haven't been mentioned:
Black Christmas (1974) - my highest recommendation! I saw that someone mentioned Black Xmas, but I'm assuming that meant the remake, since that one retitled it as Xmas. ![]() Dead Of Winter (1987) ![]() Wendigo (2001) ![]() The Dark Hours (2005) ![]() Ghostkeeper (1981) ![]() |

I remember that when it first aired on TV as the Mini Series. Colm Feore really owned it.. such a great actor and amazing presence.

I'm fond of Eugenio Martino's near-classic Horror Express (1972). Try it:
Buy It Now: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...6203648&sr=1-1 I know it's old, but Hammer's The Abominable Snowman of the Himilayas (1957) is sublime chamber-play horror that builds in anticipation and suspense. When we finally meet the Yeti, it is certainly more than you expected. Out of print now but still obtainable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/630...6203842&sr=1-1 or http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...6203842&sr=1-2 It's best to ignore the co-feature on that two-fer. Going back a little further, no one has mentioned Howard Hawks' original version of The Thing From Another World (1951). I know it's old and the remake has superseded it for current audiences, but the original still has a lot to offer: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...6204702&sr=1-1 |

Iced (1988) - rubbish but I like it.
Dead Mountaineer's Hotel (1979) - more sci-fi than horror but if you like the atmosphere & the isolated-in-the-mountains setting of The Shining, you will probably like this great Estonian movie. |
