Don't worry about it. Personally, I think the overall film is OK, but I agree with you that the ending is weak. I've seen the film about three times over the course of the 70s-90s, and every time I get to the end, I say to myself, "That's it?" I could never figure out why it freaked so many people out.

I couldn't be happier about Every Man For Himself. It's top-tier, mid-period Godard, and features on of my favourite final scenes of any film. I can't wait to see it on Blu-ray, having previously only seen it via one of Godard's own VHS copies and the AE DVD, neither of which are ideal.
Partie de campagne is another favourite, and I'm delighted to see that they're going all out for it. I was quite surprised to see that it's retailing for the full RRP given the length of the film, but the presence of Un tournage à la campagne justifies it. I'm also in for Satyricon, and will pick up Don't Look Now too. An Autumn Afternoon is excellent, but I have the BFI blu. Last edited by adamhopelies; 11-17-2014 at 11:01 PM. |

It wasn't just the photo on Instagram that fueled the rumors. It was a posting by a woman who claimed to know someone (her husband? don't recall) who was actually working on the new release.

Nice month. It's great to see more post-60s Godard on Blu and with a nice set of extras as well. Every Man for Himself is fantastic. Also looking forward to A Day in the Country.

Still didn't show up, so I figured, maybe it's DVD-only, and clicked on "Criterion + DVD" and again sorted by spine number. And there it was. The listing does give a Feb 10 street date, and says it's Blu-ray as well as DVD, so there must be a glitch somewhere that's keeping it out of the "Coming Soon" and "Criterion + Blu-ray" listings. |

I saw Witt screen this special cut of the film earlier this year, the USP of which is outlined below. "While delivering a series of talks in Rotterdam in October 1980-1981, Godard created a ‘special edition’ of his 1980 film Sauve qui peut (la vie) (Every Man for Himself, aka Slow Motion), in which he interspersed five extracts from his own film with clips from four others: Eisenstein and Alexandrov’s The General Line (1929), Cline and Keaton’s Cops (1922), Visconti’s The Earth Trembles (1948), and Wajda’s Man of Marble (1977). He called this remarkable compilation film Sauve la vie (qui peut); it was shown once (during the Rotterdam Film Festival 1981), subsequently almost completely forgotten and is presumed to be lost. Michael Witt has produced a digital reconstruction of Sauve la vie (qui peut) drawing on archival research, including examination of the original reels of film that Godard used" |

I hope they keep the grittiness - I just don't know what to expect from a Bluray that is a cartoon a I only own blurays that are real life, except Fantastic Mr Fox. I guess with cartoon animations it doesn't need to look crystal clear or perfect, especially the film subject matter, its needs the grit and dirt :P Not seen Watershed Down in YEARS though, I mean 10+ years haha, so looking forward to seeing with the supplements ![]() |

Looks like a solid month of films I've never seen.
Every Man for Himself - I'm not too taken by Goddard yet. I've only seen Breathless - Which I was lukewarm on but my wife really likes - and Contempt - Which neither of us really cared for. Both need a revisit, and I haven't given up on him, but this doesn't sound like the film to convert us either. So for now, this is a pass. Don't Look Now - Curious enough that I'd probably like to check it out. I haven't seen any of Roeg's work. It doesn't sound like a must buy for me though. Will try to find a copy to watch. An Autumn Afternoon - Ozu is one of the biggest director's in the collection I haven't tried at all yet. I like the sound of this film, but I also like the sound of the other films of his in the collection. So I will pick up one of his films in the not too distant future. Maybe this one? Maybe one of the others. Watership Down - I've never seen it and I'd love to try it, but my wife won't be having this film in our collection :P A Day In The Country - I have Rules of the Game on the way from my B&N order, so that will influence how interested I am in this. Fellini Satyricon - This is the only sure thing on the list. My wife and I have only recently started watching Fellini films, and we are enjoying them a lot. It really reads like a solid month to me, and yet, only one sure purchase for me so far. |

Wow, hell of a month.
Three definites (Watership Down, Don't Look Now and An Autumn Afternoon)...oh, who am I kidding, four definites (the Renoir is a lock too) and one solid maybe (Satyricon). And it's not like I'm ruling out the Goddard, it's just not really on my radar. Looks like I'm going to have to knock more titles off my list during this sale because July is already starting to look crowded. First World Problems are awesome. |

I'm also looking forward to Sauve Qui Peut (La Vie), and I also have the AE DVD out of necessity (plus a bootleg DVD of the Cavett interviews that Criterion is sticking on as extras). I hope this opens the door for more hard-to-find Godard to finally see US release, such as Nouvelle Vague and Germany Year 90 Nine Zero. And please, Criterion, upgrade Masculin feminin while you're at it. |

I can't believe it took Criterion 15 years to release an animated film. (They only seem to have discovered Westerns relatively recently too.) I haven't seen Watership Down since I was a kid (and I loved the book as a youngster), so I may have to give the DVD a rental first. I've already got the BFI Autumn BD and the Criterion DVD, so no need for an upgrade there. Don't Look Now is a much-welcomed release (I am actually going to just throw away my SC BD, I only kept it for the extras), Satryicon should look spectacular with the new restoration, and I'm excited to see the outtakes from Une partie de campagne, as the BFI disc was bare-bones, save a Kemp commentary. I'll have to research the Godard one. A very good month!
