But what do you do again? I’ve gathered over time that you have some sort of inside with some studios (mostly Sony) and you know people who know people who give you information that you share with people eager to fawn over you. So from what I can tell, that merely makes you an excellent messenger and an expert on nothing in particular… except relaying information.
You know me.

Thus is just like noise reduction on audio: apply too much and you get rid of the hiss along with all the high frequencies. Use it correctly and old recordings sound new.

Penton's tired of beating this dead horse and I don't blame him.
I think a lot of the hue and cry about DNR more recently isn't so much about if it is bad in-and-of-itself, but rather how much is too much.

For example, PM has offered from very sage information about films that got a "full digital washing" to achieve a particular look (Zodiac) at the specific request of the Director or DP, films that have had unintended exposure problems corrected to save what would otherwise be best takes, historical films that have had very lightly applied DNR to fix troublesome issues w/o destroying the intent of the authors, etc. In all of these respects, DNR is a valuable tool if used carefully.

But the more recent debate, and I think the only one that we should be allowed to continue in this thread is the "how much is too much?" question. At what point do you interfere with the historical or artistic value of the film by overuse of DNR to digitally "fix" it (analagous to fixing a pet.)

Then again, if PM is tired of that discussion too we can (quietly, without complaining) go elsewhere to duke it out, Thunderdome style.

Thoughts?

Thank you.
And for the record, it wasn’t just “beating a dead horse”, the pertinent point was that this particular aspect of post processing was being used as a vehicle to jump to inappropriate, incorrect conclusions and motivations regarding the format in general and essentially all studios publishing in Blu-ray.

DNR originally applied to HD DVD. It stood for "Do Not Resuscitate"...

I'm actually not sure, but I think it means "Digital Noise Reduction"... Or maybe "Dynamic Noise Reduction".

For the record, if you come to one of the insider's threads with an agenda and to attack the insiders, other members of the site or moderators, then this is not the right place for you. Let's keep it friendly, everyone...

Penton is trying to make sure that people know that DNR is a tool as well as a destroyer, and that like any tool it can be
misused. It's like "Cocaine bad! But when used properly, say in surgery, it's an invaluable tool to control bleeding"
Awesome!^^^that is the message that MUST be sent. I have complete confidence that Penton will foward the appropiate message.

I was thinking about this when I was typing. My idiocy precluded its inclusion in the post. Thanks for catching this.

PM's going to forward the message to the government that cocaine's good for surgery?

BTW, I've been busy today, so I didn't even see the first "offending" post, and I knew who it was who did it! Weird, huh?

P.S., Ben, I just noticed where you live. Could you buy some stocks for me?

Hi Penton

I remember paidgeek saying something about a single disc version of Close Encounters early this year. Also I remember reading about a Blade Runner digibook/single disc version as well. Any truth to this?

However the sorely-missed paidgeek said:

And on that note, anyone who comes in here and questions Penton's status or information is absolutely out of their mind. I've followed this thread for over a year now dating back to the heated format war and Penton has ALWAYS been 100% accurate with all of his hints, tips, news bits, etc. in how everything played out. There has never been any reason to ever doubt his information no matter who he is or who he works for. Nuff said.

Exactly. Penton-Man has been amazing.

As has been mentioned already, some "insiders" at other forums who disclosed full identity couldn't have been proven more wrong or full of BS.
