Rather than make or use a new master, they reused the HD one made for their DVD. It has crushed blacks which is the major problem I know of. It's also evident due to completely different black levels and detail levels that one shot was completely rescanned, which makes people question why the whole thing wasnt.

Still a fantastic package and a very good transfer, just a missed oppurtunity for a very important title.

Basically what fuzzymctiger said. Plus there may also be an issue with the color timing, which their old DVD release (based on the same transfer) received some flack for (it looked different from all other releases).

It's is still the best out there, but some people are (rightfully, in my mind) somewhat disappointed they chose to re-use a 10+ years old transfer instead of doing a new one, as there is definite room for improvement.

Personally, it makes me extra sad considering all the work they have done with new transfers on other titles. CH is easily the biggest cult title they have released on BD yet.

Isn't Cat in the Brain coming out on BD too? Seems like an odd incentive

Is it? I'm going to pick up the bundle if it isn't.

Here's the link to the bundle:

I left a comment on the Grindhouse website press release about the artwork. Anyone agree with me on this one?

Although it's not the original promo artwork from the early 80s, the late 90s re-release artwork was actually kind of cool in its original form. Don't know if they've sent this one to the printers yet, but I wish they'd change it. It could look so much better if they showed the entire artwork.

Fine, now I'll rejoice!

5.1 Dolby Digital? No HD audio? That, along with the old transfer for CH is starting to make me question their status as the "Criterion of cult"

At this point in time, Arrow Video has no equal.

I would assume that this should have HD audio. It looks like they may have just copied the DVD specs.

Anyway, looks like it's gonna be a pretty nice release. I have Arrow's BD too but will likely be upgrading again based on Grindhouse's track record so far.

Only gripe I have with Grindhouse BDs though is the overlapping cases they've been using for their 2-disc sets. Bit of a pain trying to get that bottom disc out/in.

I'd still love to know the breakdown of what's on each disk. I'm assuming it's gonna be something like....

Disk 1 = the film
Disk 2 = the soundtrack
Disk 3 = interviews and other things???

I really hope the original English mono and Italian tracks are also lossless. I can't stand the added sound effects on the 5.1 remix (unless this is a new remix that doesn't use the added sounds), they don't integrate with the picture at all and sound way out of place.

At the present time, there is no other company releasing cult titles that is as as consistent in quality control as Arrow. It's funny though, because they used to be crap.

I'd say Synapse is as consistent quality wise, but obviously far less prolific.

Sweet! I cant wait for The Beyond. I hope they do a better job of gluing together the slip boxes than what they did for CH.

I'd definitely say Synapse is tops. They just dont have access to as many films as Arrow does due to the fact that theres a lot more companies taking these titles in the US.

I have a strange feeling that Grindhouse will be using the same HD master that they had from their dvd release, but seeing as Arrows version of The Beyond wasnt very good to begin with it will probably still be either as good or slightly better.

I never understood the complaints about the transfer for Cannibal Holocaust as I thought it looked pretty damned good. No one ever complains when Criterion re-use their dvd era masters as upgrades even though they usually look on par with how Cannibal Holocaust looked.

Either way I'm stoked to be getting this on the same day as Massacre Mafia Style.
Now they just need to bring on Pieces and Gone With the Pope
