I upgrade to Blu-ray if the price is right. That means that comedies usually need to be dirt cheap. Most upgrades that are deserving of a higher price point need to take full advantage of HD audio and HD video to make them worth it (a.k.a. action/event films).

I've upgraded a lot of my DVD's to Blu, but I still have a ton of DVD's that I haven't or won't upgrade. A lot of it is that I don't want to double dip too much, but I will for ones that I'm crazy about.
Some of the movies that I did upgrade to BD, I still kept the DVD. Many DVD's have features on them that aren't on the BD. When it comes to my favorite movies, I want all the features I can get my hands on. Kirk Douglas' Spartacus is an example of that. I have the Criterion on DVD and the BD both. There are a few where the DVD wound up being preferable to the BD. Highlander, the series, did a few seasons in BD, but they actually wound up making it worse with their so-called restoration effort. It was really awful, almost cringe worthy. |

I've upgraded my entire collection. The only DVD's I own are of movies that are not available on blu-ray.
I gave my 500+ DVD's away to a variety of people. My girlfriend, her brother, my friends at work, my sister.... I don't sell my stuff I just give them away. I know it's stupid but it's just not something I do. |

Yes most definitely. I probably still have left close to 600 dvd's. A few I'll never replace either because I've lost interest in the movie or there is no noticeable upgrade from dvd to bluray. I hope to eventually get rid of most of my dvd's though I'll keep all my classic collection sets which will probably never come to bluray.

I upgrade. At first I was selling off my DVD versions then, as my kids started moving out on their own, I gave them my excess. Now that I finally started redeeming UV and giving my sons access to my digital collection, they don't want the DVDs anymore so I'm just keeping them for now. Maybe I will give them to family who have no interest in upgrading to BD.

Almost all the DVDs I had of movies that are now out on Blu-Ray, I have upgraded. Still have a few hundred DVD movies that I would upgrade if they ever release them on Blu-Ray and probably 15-20 that are out that I just haven't upgraded yet, mostly because of price. I really don't like the way DVDs look anymore. Guess I've become a video snob.

I sold all my DVD's minus music ones and Cabin Boy when Blu-Ray came out in 2006. It became a dead format to me. I'm in the minority here but I despise DVD now. I hate when people mention it on this site and I hate combo packs. They make no sense to me. I don't see too many kids watching Foreign Correspondent in the minivan on the way to the beach.

The movie rewlly has to be either dirt cheap on Blu ($7.99 or below), or the DVD is just unwatchably bad/old. I've only upgraded maybe two dozen titles but they're pretty essential to me (most recently was Star Wars prequel trilogy; would've upgraded the whole set but didn't feel re-buying OT without the unaltered versions).

In most cases I've "upgraded" movies I previously owned with newer editions containing better transfers, especially if they're cheaper catalog titles. There's no comparison between, say, a 4K scan and a late 90's transfer --- the remastered Robocop and the new Time Bandits Criterion are fine examples.
In some cases, like with Seven Samurai and Titanic, I'd re-buy a movie on Blu-ray because of expanded disc space. A continuous viewing is better than having to switch discs (with the exception of the awesome LoTR Extended Editions, which I never owned on DVD). If not for the reasons above, I'd re-buy a movie just because I think it will look better in HD. Blade Runner and Grand Prix exemplify this because of how much detail is packed into each frame. I can't imagine watching them any other way (for now). Other times I'll just keep my DVD copies if they contain exclusive special features or hold up well enough on my screen, like the amazing DVD transfers of many Criterion releases like La Jetee/Sans Soleil or shot-on-video television releases. |

Just remembered one more thing. When I dumped the entire DVD collection, I put every title into a spreadsheet. Titles I have absolutely no interest in replacing, I crossed out. Titles I know will be replaced get bolded. Everything else is left plain. Then I just sit and play the waiting game and grab whatever is in that list that drops to $4-6.

I've upgraded pretty much my entire collection but downsized a lot (by selling/trading or going Disc 2 Digital). A bonus in transitioning from DVD to blu is it has allowed me to kind of re-evaluate my tastes. I bought a ton of DVDs as blind buys and a lot when i was in college. My tastes have changed (especially in comedies) and so has my collection.
The only DVDs i have are left are TV series that aren't available yet on blu (seinfeld, scrubs, transformers g1), Aladdin ![]() There are still some staples that I will buy on whatever physical format is available that provides the best picture and sound (Braveheart, The Matrix, Gladiator). |

I own a couple of thousand DVDs and do replace the one I like with blu-ray's and give them away when I can. I need to go through my DVDs and get rid of half of them I don't buy Blu's the same way I bought DVD bought a lot of them second hand buy two get one free used. I enjoy BLU-Rays more then DVDs being more selective with what I buy.
