The only chance we have of a proper release is if Criterion (or someone similar) picked up the rights... and they won't be interested because it's not Japanese. Most distributors just accept whatever rubbish they're given. They only care about taking your money.

Classic HK features certainly get no respect; for the most part. I do not see the point of destroying one`s own legacy. But, I guess that no one in China cares about the old school. USA only knows the cut versions. However, Japanese love them and give them some respect but no English subs. Cant win. With HK old school, you just gotta break out with the dvd and an CRT television and be satisfied. Cause 99% of these classics look like utter sh*t; and that`s being kind.

(sadly, we both know this from all the years of being a fan of these films)

Maybe Eureka (Masters of Cinema) could do it, they've got Dragon Inn but thats "arty" in comparison.
The same lab in China/HK that did that restoration also did one for A Better Tomorrow (I think) so thats some hope.. if someone could release that, it would be a start.

You need a company with financial backing that knows these films well, or at least employs someone who does. At least then they can say no to Fortune Star upscaled crap and do there own remasters a bit like Arrow in the UK do with there releases. Can't see it happening as the companies i have spoken to in the UK say there is no market which is crazy when you see some of the obscure stuff that does get a HD release.

I refuse to believe that there's no market for the better known titles at least.

There's some very obscure rubbish out on BD... but Jackie Chan won't sell?
Nonsense!

A Chinese Ghost Story is just arty enough to pass for art label inclusion.

I would love to see some of the classic Shaw Brothers movies released as well, they are already remastered HD. I am sure these would sell, there are a lot currently released in Germany (some English friendly) so if there is a market for them in that country why not here?
Also the Bruce Lee movies have got a HD release in most European countries except the UK, very odd.
Back to the subject i would buy a Chinese Ghost Story if it was remastered proper HD immediately.

Some of the Shaw Bros. films arent fully HD are they? For example Heroic Ones (1970) is only 1080i on BD at the moment.
