Nah, man. We should've gotten Seahorse Smaug instead.

Now, THAT would been scary!

This picture is a bit large but it showcases the differences rather clearly. Dragon (theatrical version AUJ of Smaug) on the left. Wyvern (DoS version of Smaug) on the right.

It's purported/rumored that Thrain and Dol Goldur will be covered in TBo5A's appendices.

Speaking of design changes, they should of kept the original practical look for Bolg:

Instead of the CGI design they went with:

Don't know about all these different Smaug versions y'all are talking about, but I found the EC of TDoS a better film than the TC. Just enough added content here and there to flesh out some of the story elements to make it all make a bit more sense.

The original Bolg is too ridiculous (I know, this is a PJ film) and he looks like he just came from a GWAR concert.

Watched the EE for the first time yesterday and loved it! The new stuff with Thrain was the best.

He is the orc that is
[Show spoiler]beating up Gandalf at Dol Guldur when Galadriel and the White Council come to rescue him
. I only know cuz I read it somewhere that it was a little easter egg Jackson and co. put in.

I love the original Bolg design, but I've come to accept and even like the new one. My only regret is
[Show spoiler]Legolas
got to kill him, which feels anticlimactic when you know what could have been.

My biggest unrealistic hope for the EE of the third film is that Bolg's fate will be closer to the book.

It's an amazing improvement, isn't it? The character of Beorn and the Dol Guldur subplot especially benefit. I have a feeling the EE of Battle of the Five Armies will be quite the revelation, and I say that as someone who already loves the theatrical cut.

And again, Beorn was severely underused in BotfA. he appeared for less than a minute. Hopefully, there'll be more of him onscreen in the EE.

I'm pretty sure there will be. There was at least one scene in the teaser trailer for BotFA where
[Show spoiler]we see a Dwarven chariott pulled by rams on the frozen river near the battle where Beorn joins in
. Can't wait for the EE!

It's literally less than 15 seconds, the biggest disappointment of BotFA by far. I still don't understand how Peter Jackson of all people could pass up the chance to have a huge bear storm in and slaughter orcs and wargs left and right, it seems like something that should be right up his alley. And after all the talk of "there'll be much more Beorn in the third film", "we're saving his bear form for the third film", "he'll be one of Weta Digital's most impressive CGI creations to date", etc.

Oh well, it is what it is I suppose. It's been confirmed there'll be more of him in the EE and I really hope it's a substantial amount of footage.

Yeah, all that work put into Smaug and Beorn design, then
[Show spoiler]less than 10 minutes of Smaug and under 20 seconds of Beorn in TBo5A...

With Smaug
[Show spoiler]I get it, because they pretty much used him as much as they possibly could in Desolation of Smaug already, and I guess it might've also been in response to the complaints they received for dragging the Smaug vs. dwarves sequence out too much.
But Beorn, I really have no idea why they suddenly decided to cut him out almost completely from the theatrical cut.

I'm sure there will be, but he just completely got shafted in this trilogy. The whole point of including him in DoS was apparently just to set him up for the Battle, but even then he barely shows up. Theatricals could have pretty much excised him altogether (the Company could've gotten the ponies that took them to Mirkwood somewhere else) and tightened things up.

Bilbo: "Hey, look, a cabin with a magic Elvish deadbolt to keep evil Orcs at bay!"

Gandalf: "Oh look, ponies too!"

Thorin: "I wonder where the owner is?"

Bilbo: "Must be vacationing at his other summer home."

Entire party: *shrug* "Let's devour all this milk and honey and think nothing of it. We ain't afraid of no bears!"

Azog: "Blast these convenient Elvish safehouses and their deus ex stables of machina!"

Beorn: "I love Aspen. Wheeee who doesn't like a snowboarding bear?!"
