It's not a fad Dylan imo. It's here to stay. I think there are enough people who love film to ensure that it will survive but I'm not confident lol!

Meh, some people watch Game of Thrones via live cable, some people DVR it, some people watch it OnDemand and some people watch it via an HBO app. Some even wait for the discs.

So what?

All this hand-wringing over changing consumption is silly.

People watch Veep on the way to work?

Life will go on.

I discussed similar with you several weeks ago didn't I? Was it you who believed that TV sets are going nowhere and it would take at least thirty years for millennials to put big screen tv on the scrap heap? Even though tv households have dropped on the UK for the first time ever. I respected your view but don't you think if millennials are abandoning movies and traditional tv for youtube and Vine (six second clips) then that time span would be significantly lower. A TV set is useless if all you are interested in is posting selfie video clips and watching the latest annoying YouTube star.

Nobody is 'abandoning' movies and tv shows.

They're watching movies and tv shows through different portals. So what?

They're also doing other things. So what?

Would you be panicking about the looming death of the television set if you read an article that said people between the ages of 18-24 were reading a lot of books?

I don't think they are watching through other portals. . I think short form video is overtaking traditional tv and movies for teenagers. I don't think this is a trend I think it is a shift.

To answer your question, no. But video content is completely different.

This is where people are trying to predict the future & you cannot do that in any way shape or form. Isn't going to happen.

Best thing to do is enjoy what you do & have & let what happens / Happen

It has been argued though that whatever the generation of today grow up with sets the future in motion. Regardless, I will be a dinosaur if necessary hanging on to old school entertainment till the day I die as long as traditional media is not snatched away from me/us.

I would not worry about it

Nobody can or is able too or will ever be able to predict what is going to happen, because that/it can change in a week/month/year from what they see or hear.

I am not trying to ruin the discussion here ~ Just saying that not a sole on this earth knows how things will be in a year or 5 years or longer

Yeah, I hear what you are saying. I read too many tech mags/websites etc.. I love tech but sometimes it can make for disturbing reading. The trends are moving away from movies and TV for younger people. Let's hope some future tech puts things right.

Youtube and short form video lke vine and instragrams 15 second video tools could fuel the complete shift away from movies. Movies, hopefully will hang on but for anyone under 30 I believe it is quite likely that in their lifetime, movies will be gone. If 1 hour is too long for the new generation what chance do movies have anyway? It is almost unthinkable but it is a threat. This might be controversial but it could happen in less than 20 years if youngsters continue to abandon big screen tv and conventional media.
Hopefully the movie industry won't go the same route as the music industry. But it doesn't look good, esp. when you look at the general quality of things being made today ... sure, the tech is great, but it can't make up for the lack of creativity.

But don't just blame the millenials. They certainly deserve their share, but the other part of the equation is corporate greed. Like everything else today, it's all about the $. And in actuality it seems like it's all about getting that last 1/2 cent (of profit) ...

I think you do the younger generation no favours. Frozen is quite popular with under 30s, I believe, that's going to be around for quite a while. There is a wealth of quality television around now, more than ever, so someone must be watching it, albeit in non-traditional ways (Netflix etc). Started Marco Polo tonight, quite stunning to look at; Pointless watching on a small screen, it's big screen, old fashioned, entertainment.

Frozen did phenomenal sales on both Blu-ray and DVD this year. It is definitely going to go down as the biggest selling Blu-ray of all time (at least until something else surpasses it...if that happens, and that's a big if). I don't think it has ever left the top 10 in disc sales in any week since it debuted.

But other than that massive release, I don't think there has been anything else that has done very strong sales on disc this year. It's been a relatively weak blockbuster year. Even Guardians of the Galaxy couldn't prevent Blu-ray sales from being down 31% from last year during the same week.

Oh, but that already happened. Don't you remember? About thirty years ago? When MTV was going to ruin civilization by creating a generation of quick-cut, fast-edit addicted addle-headed ADD zombies?

It was in all the papers.

They're going to coexist: feature length movies and short form videos.
Sometimes one will be in the mood for a quick fix, other times one will want a longer "sit down" experience

But will the millennial generation have the ability to enjoy a sit down experience? Once all the current 30 and 40 something's have passed that leaves the generation that are flicking through Twitter, checking facebook, playing candy rush, checking their status, listening to some crappy boy band or girl band from x factor, posting or watching the latest non-celebrity from youtube, using Vine to post a six second video of them putting their shoes on, back to Twitter to tell the world about it rinse and repeat. Their are stats to show younger people are moving away from tv. That is not healthy for the future of movies and TV series. When 6 second clips are considered the future of journalism and advertising I think all hope is lost for mankind.

Different world now. Movie stars hold little appeal for millenials and youtube is far more I portent to them than the next blockbuster. Plus back then, you didn't have all the social networks and portable entertainment devices that you can literally take anywhere.

How old do you think millennials are?

Someone in their mid 30s can be a millennial, way to stereotype a whole generation.

Ok then, let's say someone under 25. Some class millennials as people who were born from 2000 onwards. That makes more sense in my argument.

Millennial is just another name for Gen Y.

After 2000 is Gen Z.

It depends who you speak to. People have different descriptions. Like I said, let's just say the under 25 section.
