I don't have a specific set amount or guideline, but I buy steelbooks and/or special releases during release week for whatever the sale price is if I want it. ($19.99-$24.99 usually.) Otherwise, I rarely buy titles at anywhere near full price anymore. Occasionally I'll pick something up during release week if it's a good price and I loved the movie or missed it and am sure I'll like it, but that doesn't happen that often anymore.

Why not just rent the movie?
Then wait for a big price drop, to buy it.

I never go to commercial theaters anymore, since I upgraded to a projector.
Why pay premium prices to go see a movie, when most theater chains don't bother to
calibrate there projectors, or sound systems, correctly?

Depends on the film. I can wait a while for most films to drop a little but if there is an exclusive or something, I might buy it first day. I actually look at Amazon UK a lot as thier prices are a lot lower for some movies so you can get good deals there pretty easy sometimes.

I don't buy many right away, but I am willing to buy the Marvel films- Captain America: Winter Solider; Thor: The Dark World; and Guardians of the Galaxy this year- for about $19.99 on opening day.

Spent loads on titles in the last 18 months and now for the most part I'm putting pretty tight targets on price to ease up the purchases.

When I look at all the unwatched titles I have it's absurd to keep buying new releases at full fat prices.

Sometimes though I can't help myself

Depends on the movies. I'll pay full price for Fury and Interstellar on the release dates. I always go to Target where I get my 15% discount and I never buy Steelbooks or Digibooks. Just not into them. I'll pay full price on the limited Twilight releases just to make sure I get a copy. I only own 3 of those though. Other then that I stick to my 3-4 dollar used blurays or amazon 5 dollar ones. Sometimes I'll dig through the walmart bin, but even those are pretty pricy for me.

Movies that I'm dying to see I'll pick up for $20 on day one but not a day after.

I'll be getting Boyhood on day one no matter the price.

If I like the film enough and it comes with a slipcover, I'll buy it first week for $19.99-$22.99

Slipcovers disappear as fast as a month now. Plus if you wait to buy a title, the digital copies are harder to sell because mostly everyone has it by then.

I purchase day one releases less than 10% of the time. I don't keep track, but out of my 250+ title library, roughly ~20 have been day one, full price purchases. Usually, I'm patient enough to wait for a sale.

I'll probably buy Boyhood next week, but I may end up holding out for the Criterion special edition.

I'd say there are about 5 or 6 releases a year that I will buy at full price on release day. This includes steelbooks and regular amaray releases. My criteria for a full price purchase on day 1 always boils down to the answer to this question, "How much do I like this film?"

As to renting the film, I hate doing that (assuming we're talking something like iTunes). I'm spending money for something that I'll eventually spend money AGAIN on, and I'm not getting the extras.

I will say this about the three films I saw in theaters this year.

Gone Girl: Yeah, it was an AMC theater, so my expectations were low. But wow both the picture and sound (that soundtrack!) were excellent. I can't really complain.

Interstellar: I saw this at a 15/70mm IMAX theater at the Henry Ford Museum. Quality-wise, it doesn't get much better than that.

Hunger Games: Went back to the same AMC where I saw GG, so it was pretty darned good again, of course.

But yeah, I hardly get out any more. But I've been lucky so far, at least in 2014.

It has not. It may not even happen. But I think there's a 75% chance a Criterion SE packed with special features will materialize within the next 2 years after Paramount has gotten enough mileage out of their release.

Very rarely, unless I want a movie by a specific time (e.g. to watch with family during the holidays) or I know that the price won't drop much (Star Wars, Hobbit EEs). Typically, I'll spend $5-10 (shipped) on a movie by scouring trade stores, sales, and third party websites.

I buy Disney/Marvel blus from Redbox for $5. It's the exact same disc (special features and all), and Disney releases have gotten cheaper in their production (no slips, cover art, DVDs, digital copies, bonus discs, etc.) while rarely getting cheaper in price.

I refuse to unless I really like the movie. Captain America for example.

Like a lot of folks have said, there are a few movies that come out that I and the family really want to see, so I don't mind paying 20 bucks for them. But for most, I'll wait till they're under 10.
