Been waiting for this release ever since the 20th anniversary rip-off. It's Warner so it's not exactly a surprise that it was coming. My guess is that it will almost certainly have lossless audio upgrade. The big question is of course the video. Since new featurettes are with Scorsese are confirmed and there's "a Letter from Martin Scorsese" in the digi/book/let, I'm a little more optimistic since Scorsese seems to be directly involved with the release.
If they still re-release the old poor transfer, it goes without saying that many will be angry with Warner. But I will also be angry at Scorsese himself, who continuously endorses the blu ray format, if he himself didn't step in and disallow Warner from releasing the 2006 HDDVD transfer again, which doesn't come close to showcasing blu ray's full potential. Spielberg stood up to Universal and demanded that they should release his movies with proper picture quality worthy of the blu ray format or not release them at all, Scorsese should do the same! I sent a message/complaint to Warner, asking them if this release will be a remaster, I hope more people do the same: http://www2.warnerbros.com/web/main/...er_service.jsp |

http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...D=1800#auswahl In the case of Goodfellas, I have no doubt that a re-encode would help, and that it would help tremendously in some bit rate starved spots of the movie: http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...ss=1#vergleich Unless they messed up the master itself like Universal may have done with DNR with some of their movies. I hope that a 4K remastered edition will be released, this is after all 2015. But at the very, very, very least, it should be a re-encode. |

I would purchase it if it is a feature-rich remaster. This is one my Top 5 movies of all time, yet I don't own it. That's because the releases have been so ho-hum, and because I've seen it about 15 times. So no need to acquire a crappy disc just to put on my shelf.

These were my exact thoughts too upon seeing this thread. On the other hand though, WB did surprise us all with those extended director's cut blu-rays of Once Upon a Time in America back in September.

I'm resigned to accept that studios won't spend money to remaster anything anymore. Once there's an HD master made, even if it's flawed and a few years old they will feel like it's enough. The only films getting remastered today are the ones without an HD master already, i.e. the occasional deep catalog title and probably only if the sublabel licensing it asks for a remaster to be made, like Arrow did with The 'Burbs. Repackagings with lossless audio seems to be the only upgrade studios are interested in these days. |
