Default Jack Tretton says BC is out!

PS3
On backwards compatibility: Jack explained that Sony looked at how to "not take a greater hit on production cost, without losing PlayStation's heritage ... Hardware / software for backwards compat wasn't all that expensive. ... but we're selling PS2 software to PS2 customers, and selling PS3 software to PS3 consumers." Still, Jack seems to feel like it may have been the wrong move. "I would like to have had it in there, but Sony's collective strategy determined we could afford to lose it. We've now gone down that road, and we're not going back."

You guys have to start knowing how to translate corporate talk

Here it goes:

On backwards compatibility: Jack explained that Sony looked at how to "to maximize profit like every other company out there, without losing our Customers ... We totally have a software based solution available now. ... but we're selling PS2 software to PS2 customers for as long as they'll be paying for it, and selling PS3 software to PS3 consumers as we have to show good sales on PS3 games to strengthen our numbers." Still, Jack seems to feel like it may have been the wrong move. "I would like to have had it in there if it had been proven that it was a selling point, but Sony's collective strategy determined we could afford to lose it because people weren't really willing to pay an additional $100 for it. We've now gone down that road but might come back to it if it proved valuable to retain/increase our customer base, and we're not going back until then as long as it'll be more profitable to not go there."

Never say never in Business

The moment their analysts say that they can do a $299/$249 PS3 and that MS does a $199 360 at which point a ton of PS2 owners will be ready to jump to the next gen consoles, amazingly enough, BC will reappear to retain the user base.

Mark my words

You sir, win the internetz. If PCSX2 can do PS2 Software Emulation with no documentation and limited back end know how, I really think Sony would be ok doing it.

Who cares about BC IMO. I didnt buy a next gen system to play previous gen games. If you want to play a PS2 game or two THAT bad then just go buy a slim PS2 for like $50 and be done with it.

Yes. They need to move on with the PS3. Not last gen. games.

Exactly....personally I was shocked when they announced 139 NEW games coming out for the freaking PS2 in the next year. Thats just dumb.

Its also a BIG reason why the 360 has better sales numbers. Think about it. How many NEW Xbox games come out? I think its ZERO. M$ doesnt support the previous gen any longer and doesnt sell it any longer. People who want new games HAD to buy the 360. With the PS2/PS3 Sony is still highly supporting the PS2 and because of that people with PS2s are gladly waiting it out for either a HUGE price drop (dont know how much more they expect the PS3 to drop honestly) or just not at all because as long as the PS2 is getting new games they dont feel the need to purchase a PS3.

BC has been an important issue for some people, but those that are really interested will buy a system that offers the option.

...except that once these new units go into production and all the existing 80GBs are gone, there won't be another option except on the after-market.

EDIT: Before I get flamed, I'll repeat again my assertion that BC will magically reappear via firmware update at some point in the future. Probably shortly after the last of the old style 80GB units are flushed out of the retail channel.

It's the only thing that makes sense. Sony KNOWS they have a 100M+ user base to draw from, they're not going to throw that advantage away. Not when they're still in a fight to the death with the Xbox 360, and so far behind the Wii that they can't even see the dust trails.

But until that firmware appears, they will deny to their last breath that they have the ability to do so, because they don't want to make the older units expensively obsolete,

No. No access to RSX.

PS2 emulator would be extremely difficult to achieve on the PS3. The PS3 just doesn't have it in the right areas. The GS (PS2 GPU) had the weirdest architecture and the only way to get PS2 games onto non b/c PS3s would be to re-engineer them to use lower fill-rates.
