Default Gimme Shelter

I just watched a film that I rarely, if ever, see mentioned in here ... Gimme Shelter. This is one of those films that really hit home for me. I was a freshman in high school at the time of the actual concert in the movie, so I can relate very well to what was going on in the country at that time. This is another great slice in time ... a real life event ... preserved to bluray by Criterion.

And as usual, the supplements are top notch and add so much to the movie. I especially enjoyed the audio excerpts from KSAN's call-in radio show, which was recorded the day after the concert. I still need to watch the movie again with the audio-commentary, which I hope to do tomorrow. (Thank you Criterion!)

I've note seen the entire film on dvd, just the opening shot, so I don't have anything to compare to, but I will say the quality was quite something to behold. It was very crisp and sharp, with not a lot of noise. However, there were lines in a few parts of the film that looked to be part of the negative and not able to removed. But other than that, it was pretty amazing. Not that I wanted to see Welles sweat and drool, but you can really see all the detail later in the film when he is sweating profusely and he does an extreme close-up of his face.

Overall I loved movie... even with
[Show spoiler]Heston playing a Mexican
.
I just recently upgraded my copy to blu-ray (B&N has the limited edition with Welles' memo to Universal's studio heads for $20 right now if anyone is interested). I haven't watched the blu-ray yet, but I'm glad to hear it looks good.

I also just received the Criterion blu-ray of 'Les Visiteurs du Soir' from Amazon and am glad to see that the restoration wasn't ruined by Pathe, like 'Children of Paradise'

I watched this for the first time this past summer on Hulu or Netflix. I'll start by saying I am not a huge Stones fan, nor was I around in 1969, so some of the aspects of the time may be lost on me... though I am a big history and culture person.

The film was quite well made, and it was really interesting to see how the Altamont concert played out. It was a great behind the scenes doc on the Stones and that tour.

Well, growing up in the era that I did, it was hard not to be a Stones fan in some respect. They were such a large part of our music back then ... still are for many of us. The types of people depicted in the film were my older brother and sister's friends (figuratively speaking) ... not too far removed at all from my own friends. Watching this so many years later, I had a feeling of "Wow, that's right! ... I remember those days (in so many ways)!" I got that same type of feeling when watching Two-Lane Blacktop. I suppose when it comes down to it, all it means is I'm old.

I totally get what you're saying, I have films that resonate the same for me, and while I'm not a 60's child, I'm an early 70's child. So for me, some of the Metal films, and others, take me to that same place. And not having an older sibling, my dad was my musical influence... everything from The Eagles, to ABBA, to Mac Davis, to Tom Jones, to Engelbert Humperdinck... and from my mom, Elvis!!

I love those style movies, that make me feel young again. And I do enjoy some older Stones tunes.

Maybe one more thing I could have mentioned, but didn't. Going into Gimme Shelter, I was expecting to see a concert film. (I'm not sure if I'm ruining anything for anybody with this next part, so thought it would be better to spoiler it).
[Show spoiler]But it really isn't that at all. It's more a film about everything that was going on *around* the concert and why/how it turned into such a disaster. Again, if anybody's interested in this film, the KSAN talk-radio audio clips supplement is well worth listening to. (I'm thinking the audio-commentary is too, but I haven't gotten that far yet).

I thought the same thing, though I was expecting a little back story on the event. I've yet to listen tot he commentary as well, but hoping it'll be enjoyable.

I like the Stones well enough and caught about 25 minutes or so near the beginning of the film when it aired on TCM on NYE. Too much footage of them lounging around in the studio listening to their recorded sessions.

Interesting tidbit... that is the same Melvin Belli at the beginning of the film who had the supposed Zodiac killer call in on his TV show in the late 60's.

I don't want to give too much of it away, but I think that "lounging around" is part of the story.
[Show spoiler]I might need to go over it again, but after my first viewing, I think that part is sort of a flashback of the events that had already happened ... of everybody trying to piece it together and figure out what went so terribly wrong and why. Maybe I'm wrong. It sure wouldn't be the first time, as they say...

EDIT:
[Show spoiler]I was wrong about the flashback. Please disregard my opinion. (sigh ... )

you might be right. there were definitely scenes of them trying to understand what had happened. (an early scene where they are listening to a talk radio caller slam them comes to mind.) it was late on NYE and since I am, like my best buddy says, "old balls," I was ready to call it a night and sleep through the New Year. I might have understood those scenes incorrectly.

wasn't bad though... from what I saw

I (finally) watched my Criterion Blu-ray of The 400 Blows last night.

I've seen the movie several times by way of my old DVD, but the Blu-ray upgrade sat neglected at the bottom of my still-unwatched stack for almost a year.

I love how François Truffaut's feature-length directorial debut blends nostalgia, laughter, sadness, innocence, and maturity into such a fast-paced narrative that pulls the viewer along by way of visually intuitive camerawork.

While watching The 400 Blows, I always remember the crazy and dumb things that I did during childhood. When I was 11 years old back in 1983, I tagged along with my older brother and his friends while they broke into a hunting lodge in the woods behind our neighborhood. They had no malicious intent, but were just clowning around and trying to see if a break-in could be done. When the local police discovered that we were the culprits, they showed up at our houses, talked to all of our parents, and had us visit the police department and jail for a conference. It turns out that the police just wanted to scare the wits out of my friends and me so that we would avoid trouble in the future, and their plan worked. This was quite a terrifying experience for my 11 year-old self, and I have never forgotten the look, the smell, and the overall vibe of that city jail. The scene in The 400 Blows where Antoine Doinel is locked into his holding cell and we see the chicken wire of the cell from his point of view always brings back recollections of my own experience.

I'm sure that every adult clearly remembers that first moment during childhood when he or she got into real trouble...not just in trouble with parents or in trouble with the schoolteacher, but real trouble. I suspect that this is one reason why this Truffaut film has such a universal appeal.

Sounds like they heard what happened to a young Alfred Hitchcock.

Re: The drawing,

The Rose is one of my most-wanted titles on Blu-ray. It's a wonderful, visceral, soul crushing experience. I especially love the final setpiece with the helicopter and the fireworks and the crowd (for which Zsigmond called in a lot of favors from other DPs to come and work cameras).

Thought: Criterion just posted a picture of Takashi Murakami on Facebook. Maybe the eye on the end of the fishing line in the teaser drawing is a hint for Jellyfish Eyes. The eyes looks quite anime-ish.

You might be onto something...

This is at least as solid a connection as any of the other theories being bandied about.
