Here is one source that considers its status relative to noir while at the same time providing a pretty good summation/review:

Thanks. I'll read that article when I'm not half asleep.

As for Hitchcock and Noir, I definitely think Strangers on a Train and Shadow of a Doubt are Noir.

I agree. And I would say Suspicion falls into the Damsel in Distress Noir realm, ala 20th Century Fox's House on Telegraph Hill, (which totally rips-off the milk scene from Suspicion).

Apologies beforehand if the topic has been covered previously, but I have a question about the Spanish blu-ray of Gun Crazy.

Can anyone who owns this release tell me if the disc has a DTS-HD MA track? The French release does, but the Blu-ray.com page doesn't list the audio track for the Spanish version. Also, are the subtitles removable?

Thanks for the help.

Even though it's considered a comedy/drama, would the Apartment be considered Film Noir or is it a stretch? It certainly contains a lot of very dark material with a lot of loathsome characters.

I'd personally consider it a stretch to call The Apartment a film noir, mainly because of the tone of the conclusion. The movie brushes with dark material, but it's more of drama with comedy thrown in.

I give The Apartment my highest recommendation on its own terms, though. It's one of my favorite films.

I can't help you on the Spanish blu ray audio but please check back in with us in this thread if you get it. Would like to know the specs myself. I've been on the fence about the French release hoping another one would come out

I agree as well. A+ film, but not so noir. Great b/w cinematography though

just noticed The Lady From Shanghai is getting a re-release on Mill Creek.
uhh wow.
that's just sad, even if Mill Creek isn't the worst distributor around.
I mean, it's only The Lady From Shanghai.
just nothing else to say at this point.

It's about as noir as Citizen Kane or Casablanca. (In other words, it's not).

It will be interesting to see if the TCM version goes out of print. I hope it doesn't.

To be fair, Mill Creek has gotten A LOT better since the early days. THey put out some really respectable Gamera BDs that were even better than the Japanese releases.

Anyway, we went to see Sunset Boulevard tonight at the Alamo Drafthouse and it was a truly magnificent movie. Normally, over acting is not good, but here, it was done in such a down right incredible manner that I couldn't picture the movie without it. What is even more interesting is that everything they say Hollywood was like back then still seems to hold true to even this day. The characters were great even if they were not likable, but that was the point. The fact the movie is narrated by a dead man is even more impressive. However, that scene at the end on the staircase was just epic. That is two movies now I have watched in the last two weeks that have had an amazingly suspenseful ridden and wonderfully shot scene of people coming down the stairs. I loved how those on the case were all still until it was their moment to move. That was incredible. I think I am going to give this movie an excellent 9/10 stars.

I've ordered the Spanish disc. Will let everyone know the specs when it arrives around the end of the month.

The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry (1945) should be added to the OP. It's up for pre-order at Amazon (March 31 release): link.

I've been waiting a long time for this one. My favorite noir made outside the U.S.
