If you are interested in an Ultraviolet digital copy, I'm giving away one that came with my 50th Anniversary Limited Collector's Edition. Unfortunately I'm in Australia and the code won't work. I'm sure there are ways to go around it but I couldn't be bothered. Anyways, the code is
ABNTSTH8BMD9EEV5 It expires 11/13/2014, so you better be quick. I would appreciate that if it's something you won't watch via streaming/digital copy that you leave it that someone that hasn't got the film or would really use a streaming/digital copy. Enjoy! |

OCD me broke down and bought the Japanese Mi4K version just for the fact it's split over two discs and the disc change is at the intermission. Haven't watched it yet but it's supposed slightly better PQ wise to the single disc version.

Does this ever go on sale? It's sitting at $49.99. I'm not sure if it's worth it...the regular BD is priced at $9.99. And I've seen it as low as $4.99. That's a huge difference for a big box, even if it comes with the soundtrack, the book, and a few other extras.

Anyway, I paid well over $50 on day one, and it was worth every penny, since it's one of my favourite films, and that boxset is a thing of beauty. Of course, how big a fan of the film you are, and how much you value extraneous paraphernalia, will govern your own value judgement... You know what's included. |

What Farid is saying is that it doesn't come with the kind of things you're almost certain to only look at once. Take the "Batman" set, which has trading cards and a toy car. A really nice coffee table book, a CD soundtrack, and an extra Blu-ray disc of extras are less likely to be ignored as trinkets. |

This weekend, I'm watching Lawrence of Arabia on the Oslo 70 mm festival. It will be great to watch it, and interesting to compare it with the Blu-Ray release. The resolution will obviously be much higher, but I'm curious of how the colours are.
And of course: It's on film! |

It's definitely the crown jewel of my collection. I could only dream that some other classics got this type of treatment, all the way through. Just amazing!

Is it just me, but is there a tiny, wee bit of edge enhancement on the BD? I've brought this up before. It's very slight and I am not sure if it's just a camera optical effect, or how part of how it was remastered. I mean the disc looks great, overall.

How was the sound? Is the brass occasionally a little harsh, especially near the beginning? The BD seems like it is a little brighter than I remember the 70 mm 6 track to be. Maybe, but I really didn't notice it most of the time on our 130" wide screen. Maybe it's the sharp edges of images on a 65mm negative (at least when well rendered on a 70 mm print) .. maybe this ultra sharpness shows up on a BD. I will say that one long shot made me wonder if there were edge enhancement, though. |

I'm not following your 4K argument, by the way. As a rule of thumb, a 4K scan of a 35 mm negative is required to capture all the detail (including the grain), so I would suppose that a 15-16K scan would be required to capture all detail on a 70 mm (in reality: 65 mm) film. (And I'm guessing that they used very low film speed for many of the scenes in Lawrence of Arabia.) But I'm no expert. Last edited by Farge-TV; 01-20-2015 at 08:51 AM. |
