And I wouldnt have this release make you cancel your Basilisk order. A while back someone had a list of confirmed upscales and confirmed HD releases, and I'm 905 sure Baislisk was on the true HD list.
Agreed. I should have both waiting on me Tuesday

I think I'll just stick with my original Geneon box set.

The price is about the same for both the DVD and blu-ray sets, around $45, varying a little depending on the store.

By the way anyone notice that the price for Sony Japanese release is almost $500.00. This is not a misprint I have search other Japanese sites and price are from $425.00 to near $500.00

It should also be noted that the original audio mix for Champloo was stereo, and the Japanese DVDs have LPCM audio. This 2.0 mix is on the US DVDs (in DD 224kbps) but was for some reason dropped for the Blu-ray.

So the 5.1 mix was most likely a simple upmix made by the US producers, and comparing the 5.1 DTS to the original 2.0 DD on the DVD, I thought it was actually worse, as it sounded more tinny.

DARN IT!! I was so excited to get this titles that I didn't think of checking the reviews!! Wait. Has this release been reviewed yet? I still haven't got my copy, it should be any time next week, but I will be pretty darned if the image or video sucks!! I have supported funimation wholeheartedly. Now I won't put up with a lackluster edition of champloo.

I got mine today. It does look pretty nice for an upscale (though you can certainly tell it is); the image is sharp, colors are pretty saturated and most importantly, there are no artifacts. Black levels are strong, and whites are especially good; the glints from unsheathed swords are quite eye-catching. I freeze-framed at the point of screenshot #11 to check the wood grain on the stairs; there did seem to be a loss of detail, but it's rather insignificant. Both TrueHD tracks are front-heavy and the LFE isn't strong but dialogue was very clear and without distortion.

I've never owned the DVD, but I highly doubt it's worth an upgrade. Considering the prices are virtually identical however, if you don't have the series, there's really no reason to not get this disc since there's no way the DVD could look better. These are only cursory observations and should not be held above a real in-depth review should we get one.

I'm afraid "BadAss"-ness is difficult to quantify, but it is one of the highest rated shows by the users at ANN.

I don't have the post but someone mentioned that the re release under the anime classic line has been improved a bit I think. Something was fixed I remember reading.

Less DNR was used, so more detail was preserved.

Thank you all for the input.

*sigh* guess now I'll have to double dip on it. Guess I'll pick up the BD release of Cowboy Bebop and while I'm at it Cashan since it's on sale.... any thoughts on those two?

I guess it's safe to say that it's worth upgrading from the DVD to the latest Bluray release?

As an upscale it looks very good.

Funi's re-upscale is so much better than the first piece of DNR'd shite, that Victor even used it on their JP BD release of Sam Cham, (which has a higher bitrate and original stereo materials to boot).

Thanks to whoever bumped this, the thread title makes me chuckle.

Good to hear this coming from you. You almost had me worried there, after skimming through the top of this thread and reading your earlier post from 2009.

Here's what I'm specifically referring to.

You do realize that the first POS BD release actually looked worse than the Geneon DVDs right?
