They often have a lot of other issues with their releases, but I give props to Universal for not using the eco cases.

Not a fan of eco cases. I handle my stuff very carefully, but eco cases are very frequently damaged in stores (especially in something like the Wal-Mart bargain bin). It's also a pain in the ass when I re-arrange shelves. I have to be very careful when picking up multiple discs for fear of putting pressure on the'empty' parts of the cases. I'm all for the environment, but they are a very poorly-designed product. Things should be made to last under normal use, and not need to be handled with kid gloves.

I actually replace all my Eco-cases. (And Vortex) It's like 'Phase 1' before they can enter my Blu-Ray collection. They've got to be 'Un-eco-ed'.

Could we expand this case fury to digi-packed CDs?

Why put out a deluxe re-issues of a classic album in a ****ing cardboard sleeve? That's typically half an inch taller than a regular jewel case.

And with digi-packed CDs, you can't even replace the cardboard. There are no alternatives.

I haven't had an issue with them yet. My only complaint is that on one movie the clear front part started to tear off of one corner but I can't blame the case for that. But otherwise I can't complain about them. I will admit I am not a fan of the digi-packed CDs or movies simply because you have to slide them and generally get your fingers all over them to get the out to use but thankfully I don't have many like that.

My question is what are you people doing to your blu-rays that you feel that case is not enough? For sitting on a shelf and holding a movie while I am not watching it, those cases are more than enough.

Then I would grab a BD and feel the flimsy casing flop around and cave in under my hand like cheap garbage.
Just wait until you pick up a DVD eco case as the quality seems worse than the BD eco cases. I have some DVD eco cases which bow outwards from the center due to the lack of material.

OK. I see what you mean now. I too, have some of those eco cases. I'm surprised these eco cases have lasted this long. The only movie studio that stopped using eco cases is Universal. Just wish all movies studios would follow in their footsteps.

I don't like this type of cases. My Sucker Punch blu-ray came in one of them.
My Cruel Intentions blu-ray is still sealed, I received it a few days ago and I hope that when I open it, I see a pretty case, not a eco case, that's so ugly.

I just got a box of 100 Blu replacement cases, so I can shuck off those eco things and toss them in the trash where they belong.

"...For sitting on a shelf and holding a movie while I am not watching it, those cases are more than enough".

Sure...but sitting on shelf in my living room isn't the problem, is it?

Before a disc gets to me, who knows how many other people handled or mishandled it. Some kid with a box-cutter opened up a shipping case, UPS has tossed it onto four different tucks and ten conveyerbelts and loaded next to a bunch of auto parts, the post office has done the same, it sat at the bottom of post office pickup box with 30lbs of other mail sitting on top of it, it's been sitting on a shelf at Best Buy where 30 different people have picked it up (and some have dropped it) before putting it back on the shelf.

Just today, I ordered a Blu-ray from amazon...along with an 8 pack of batteries. That means the box of batteries and my BD will be banging into each other for the next 1200 miles.

The eco case provides no protection from the dozen of people who have probably handled your disc before it reached you.

Do I worry about it "sitting on shelf and holding a movie"? Not in the least. What WE are doing with our Blu-rays is NOT the problem.

BTW, I have actually seen a BD in an eco-case sitting on a store shelf with a puncture through the back (towards the data side of the disc). It was the last copy of a movie I wanted. Had it been in a proper case, it would not have been an issue. But as soon as I saw that little tear in the rear cover art, I knew that whatever had gone through that paper had also gone through to the disc. No sale.

I throw all the garbage eco cases straight in the trash. How is that for the environment. They would be better off making solid sturdy cases that I will keep for the rest of my life.

Yeah but they don't REALLY give crap about the environment. That's just their spiel.

They don't call them "eco cases" in lieu of "ecological cases".

Rather, it's short for "economy cases" due to the manufacturer's plastic savings (theoretical).

And the hypocritical part of it all is that they might save a couple cents on the amount of plastic that they eliminate with the voids.

One could argue they are economical but here's what Viva has to say about their eco-box.

This craze these last few years if why I quit collecting movies and games. I hate that everything now it seems comes in a flimsy eco case, has no booklet, grey or blank disc art, and basically just seems like it was produced as cheaply as it could have been. Which I guess it was.

There is absolutely no pride in owning a lot of these blu-rays anymore.

I think it's safe to say that nobody actually believes this has anything to do with the environment.

And note the first two "benefits" listed:"...significant reduction in materials, transportation costs"

In other words, BD producers don't have to buy as much plastic and these flimsy things are so light weight that you can save a buck when shipping a case lot.

Be honest; "reduction in materials and transportation costs" is not a consumer benefit. It makes it cheaper for Blu-ray producers and you KNOW those savings aren't passed on to you.

Claiming these things are environmentally friendly is just politcally correct spin so that companies don't have to publicly confess to the fact they are downgrading products to save themselves a penny. "ECO case" sounds better than the truth: " CHEAPO case".
