Here in my city in Minnesota, both Blockbusters have closed and the two Hollywood Video stores remain. I see that they are now finally promoting Bluray on their website. I hope to see more than one BD copy of Bank Job on the shelves in my city. It looks like they will be offering a bit more of a selection, and hopefully some catalog titles. Right now in this store, it's like crowding in at the 5x8 porno rental section of the old VHS rental stores..lol
But, I was surprised today when I rented Vantage Point and Ruins that they asked for additional money for a damage deposit. They can't repair Bluray discs that fail onsite apparently. Also, the whole staff has turned over including the long time manager in a single week. It makes me wonder who is winning the retail DVD rental battle Blockbuster? Netflix? Hollywood? What is the state of Bluray selection for rent where you live? Which store? |

We have one Hollywood video and one Blockbuster. The blockbuster has a bad selection (less than 20 movies) but charges a reasonable price. Hollywood has a much greater selection, but charges 8 dollars and change for a blu rental. So... I don't rent blus at all. I just buy now.

I have three BBV's within ten minutes of me and one Hollywood Video. I think if you combined BB's Blus you might have half the selection Hollywood has. I think I pay $4.99 per BD rental at Hollywood.

I rent from BlockBuster alot, I have the $12 a month thing where they send me unlimited movies in the mail (one at a time though) and I can rent 2 in the store at a time (good for DVD or BluRay), it's fairly cheap and my local blockbuster has alot of blurays, 100+ titles, almost all of the "new releases" and a good amount of catalog titles, while the website has pretty much EVERY single bluray, long waits on some of the new ones though. I can rent anywhere from 5-8 movies a month, so I'd say it's worth the money and I really only buy blurays that I REALLY want to own and watch many times.

We have (1) Blockbuster within 20 minutes and (2) within 20 minutes. The closest store just went Blu a few months ago, so their selection is terrible. The other (2) have a pretty good selection. Even though I'm a gold card member and I can call and have them hold titles, it's still a PIA to drive 20 minutes one way to pick them up.
BTW, the nearest Hollywood is 1 hour away. |

we have 2 hollywoods, 3 blockbusters, and 3 family videos.
I go to one of the hollywood videos (its by my dads office) and it is always packed and always has a lot of the movies off the shelf and has a wide selection for blu's. And they don't ask for a damage deposit unless they just started doing that this week. The blockbuster also has a smaller selection of blu's but still a lot. Family video wont get blu until its mainstream, and quoting the manager. "Nobody has a blu-ray player now, so why would we sell the discs. We don't want to loose money." Personally when its around 5 bucks to rent a blu at blockbuster and four something at hollywood, i think im just going to get netflix. |

Thanks for the info folks. My "release" dates for all movies are when the DVD is released. I never go to the theaters anymore. I'd be willing to bet that most of you don't either. Going out on a limb, I'll bet most of us have systems that are superior (size vs space) and certainly much more convenient than going to theaters.
That's why I even bother to rent. I haven't seen Doomsday or nay other titles just hitting DVD in the next few weeks, so I want to see the movie before I buy. Also, for you Hollywood Video rental people. Every year around Christmas, they sell their calendars for 3 bucks. In those calendars, are a 2 for 1 rental coupon for each month of the year. So I buy 2 calendars and have two 2 for 1 coupons for each month. If a Bluray title isn't in stock I rent the standard DVD and if I like, I'm off to buy it in Blu. |

There isn't a Hollywood Video within an hour of me unless you count all the shuttered ones.
The 1 Blockbuster has a good selection although their new releases have been coming in late the last few weeks.(they did have The Mummy returns for rent 2 weeks before release but I didn't rent it because they didn't have the first one yet). |

Hollywood Video is run by a bunch of morons. I've worked there for 4 years and ever since Mark Wattles sold the company it has been one bad decision after another.
Oh and BTW, did any of your local Hollywoods ask u for a 25 cent donation lately? Cuz exactly 0% of that is a donation. |

The only donations at Hollywood, is where they put your name on a little cut out paper rabbit or show and put it in the window for some cause.
I was unhappy that they stopped the dollar credit for early return of a rental, and now the Blurays have a manditory damage deposit, that they just seemed to have started. Thanks for the info, I miss the old staff and policies there. I used to be like Norm going into Cheers, now they ask me for ID.. so sad |

OMG! Hollywood Video is definitely going down the wrong path with its Damage Coverage fees and false donations. I haven't been to my local Hollywood because of the following reason(s): They are expensive, no subscription plan, and everything else is from the complaints of this thread.
By the way, Hollywood called me about a month ago and was asking why I dont visit very often. Hmmmm I wonder why. |

i am on first month membership at local Hollywood store, so get them for $2.50 - only rentable for 5 day periods. Once it ends, and goes up to $5, i will stop renting, might check out Blockbuster, if that's expensive, i will try Netflix. I don't want to buy every movie, there are not many movies I like to watch over and over again.
