Default Can a Floor Speaker be used as a Center speaker?

Is there any reason I shouldn't use Floorstanding speaker as a center channel?

For instance, three Yamaha NS-777s instead of two NS-777s + a NS-C444? They would all three be located below the screen anyway. Does the horizontal orientation of the center speaker matter that much? It seems like you could get better sound with three floor speakers. Obviously I am still learning, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, it's considered ideal to use three identical speakers for the L-C-R, but most people can't because the screen would be blocked by the center.

What Gremal said. Indeed, many consider the ideal setup to be seven identical speakers to ensure perfect timbre matching on all channels. There's a gent on another forum who runs seven Revel Salon 2's. I hate him.

Great! My screen is going to be about 48" off the floor, so I might use three floorstanding speakers, which makes installation easier because I don't have to mount a heavy speaker. Thanks y'all!

its actually what i think the best setup for a LCR soundstage. no problems with timbrematching, all actually in order, and well, no lobing issues either.

It's exactly what I use (I use three Snell E-II's in the front) My speaker does hit the screen about an inch but never touches the picture.

To RUR: - yeah just hearing about a guy with 7 Salon 2's makes me sick !

Make sure you keep in mind that center speakers are magnetically shielded so you dont get that crazy green and red messed up colours when you put the speaker too close to the tv. A shielded speaker doesnt do this but an unshielded speaker will so make sure that you are a good length away!

That only happens on CRT displays.

I think that plasmas, LCDs, most rear projection, and all front projection displays would not be affected by that.

If he's not using a CRT screen - no problem. That's the only type that are affected by the magnetic fields of speakers. LCD's, Plasmas ect are immune to this.

Correct. Unshielded magnets in the speakers can deflect the electrons travelling in the CRT toward the phosphors.

LCD is filtered/blocked backlight
Plasma is U/V from plasma lights stimulating visible light from (extremely close) phosphors
OLED will be directly generated visible light

Magnets won't have any affect on photons.

If a FED display ever gets to market, I expect the magnets would have to be touching the glass to have any hope of affecting it. The gap between the electron source and phosphors is miniscule.

I'll be using an Epson HC 1080UB projecting onto a 110" screen. It shouldn't be an issue.

I have to decide how high my screen is going to be placed before I decide what to do with the center channel. The speakers I am considering are all about 43" +/- I don't think I want my screen any higher than that, since it is 4.5 feet high itself.

And really, what speakers aren't shielded nowadays?

insignias from best buy... im at work so i cant really link properly, used google instead.

here

the reason why i had to mention these speakers are because they're a favorite amongst DIYers, who try to improve this speaker, and integrate them to their setup. at 79/each they're not a bad option.

That is very high for a screen. What is your viewing distance?

I'm no expert in this but you could use an acoustically transparent screen like the Clearpix2 by Screen research. This will allow you to place speakers behind the screen without affecting PQ or SQ
