Can we get all the American Sniper discussion spoilered? The thread is almost unviewable right now for those of us who have not seen it yet and are trying to avoid discussion about it until we do. Thanks!

Will do! Sorry about that, hope I didn't spoil anything major in my posts... I hate when people do that to me.

On a perhaps unrelated note, did anyone ever make it to the Truffaut exhibit at the Cinematheque in Paris? I went this afternoon and found it nicely put together. It's worth a visit for anyone interested in Nouvelle Vague history in general. You have until Sunday for the record.

It's one of those movies I loved, but not sure how to describe to others... you know what I mean? I just tell them they have to see it. I don't even care if they like it, I just want them to see it.

Under the skin is amazing a film you think about days after. I'm a fan of the movie too! Check the avatar lol..
Side note: been dying to watch 2 days 1 night!

My top 12 of 2014:

2. Birdman
3. Whiplash
4. Interstellar
5. Under the Skin
6. American Sniper
7. Grand Budapest Hotel
8. Babadook
9. Snowpiercer

I haven't seen still: 2 days 1 night, gone girl, most violent year, inherent vice or Nightcrawer

Gone Girl is incredible (imo), Nightcrawler is worth checking out but I found the score let it down at times and ruined some scenes, but incredible performance from Gyllenhaal. I am excited about A Most Violent Year (for Chastain!).

Under The Skin is mesmerising, as is Only Lovers Left Alive.

I agree on both points. I like the second design the most, I think; but I like all of them. And I would definitely purchase it from Criterion.

Such a great, compelling film.

Thanks

I found this was SJ best role, she looked human but I didn't recogniser her as SJ, she came across alien, alone and lost. She was perfect. (I also love her in Lost in Translation).

The score for Under The Skin is also bloody incredible. So full of mood and emotion.

And I thank you for that (as well as the many others around here who likewise do so). It's very refreshing to see a lot of reviews around here that actually fundamentally focus on reviewing the filmmaking ability and the actual aesthetic quality of the work, instead of judging it with an ideological lens. Far too often (and especially with American Sniper at the moment) I've seen reviews from other places that are basically "I don't like it's politics, therefore it's bad" which to me is just ridiculous and lazy criticism…There's lot's of art all throughout history that I don't agree with ideologically, but that I still love and appreciate as art. I find it very narrow minded when people can't.

Anyway, I enjoyed your review and I've very much enjoyed following your reviews The Great Owl (Not in a weird stalker way, I'm just a long time lurker of the Noir threads and topics where your reviews are quite frequent)

Unfortunately, there's a fine line between "I don't like it's politics, therefore it's bad" and "I don't like it's politics, therefore it's not something I want to watch". The former is, as you say, lazy criticism; the latter, however, is valid.

As for American Sniper, I just read post from alternet.org that really just got under my skin. I won't get into it here as it throws a blanket stereotype on the people who like the film, but will say the film, like Zero Dark Thirty was amazingly done, and Clint Eastwood continues to produce some of the best movies out now. I tend to vote Republican and Libertarian, and in no way saw American Sniper as pro-war. It actually felt anti-war at times. I thought it did a good job of showing thr horrors of what is going on over there, and the internal struggles Kyle had. My brother did 3 tours through Irag and Afghanistan, and struggles with all that went on, and came back a different person... so I know first hand how that place can screw someone up. That being said, it didn't make me blantantly anti-war... though some say it should have. I guess what I'm saying is that it is a heck of a movie, that kicks you right in the gut. Eastwood is an amazing director and Bradley Cooper was outstanding.
Excellent post!

The first clip ("Death") reminds me of some of the creepy music used in the the 1960s original TV series of Star Trek.

Lol wish Criterion would release this! Imagine this image but as a painting like some of the other cover designs, would look stunning. I think this shot really sums up the mood and theme of the film.

Sorry I'm bored and messing about lol

Polaroid: Can you contact Criterion and get a job there designing the artwork for them?

Seriously, folks, someone get Polaroid a job at Criterion!
