They are little more expensive on most blu-rays, but the regular price for Criterion discs, $39.95, so BN isn't far off. Amazon is generally cheaper unless you join the BN membership, and stack coupons during the sales.

I second the used shops. Over the past couple months I've purchased 'Walkabout' for $21, 'All That Heaven Allows' for $8 (dual format missing the DVD but had everything else), 'The Red Shoes' for $21, and 'Anatomy of a Murder' for $15 (was missing the booklet) from used shops.

That doesn't mean that people prefer it to his classic work though. It just means that it's his most popular and well received film in a while. That isn't saying much really. Godard's fanbase is nothing now to compared to what it was in the 60's. I'm glad that he has had a late career resurgence though. Last edited by malakaheso; 02-04-2015 at 06:40 AM. |

Theres a 3 page document on it too! ![]() I'll be making the effort to travel out to see IMAX version ![]() You could always mute it when its out and play your own soundtrack over it, or even get the soundtrack for the film and play over it ![]() Last edited by Polaroid; 02-04-2015 at 09:09 AM. |

There are a couple of things that quite literally won't work in 2D, such as the much-lauded type of shot that Godard has seemingly invented, but it's still an impressive film regardless.

It stands to reason that his most famous work is going to be the most popular. The 60s work has been canonised by institutions like Criterion, so it's not surprising that those are the films that are best known. To paraphrase yourself tho, that doesn't mean that those who have seen a wide range of his work prefer it over the later stuff (in my experience it's quite the opposite, with the reputation of the later work putting many off from giving it a try. Those that do give the later work a shot tend to fall heavily for it). Thankfully the later work is getting it's turn in the spotlight now, with a couple of very good books having been published of late (Daniel Morgan's Late Godard is brilliant, while Michael Witt's Cinema Historian stands as one of the major events in Godard publishing) and the later films coming up for revaluation from the likes of Criterion and Cohen on home video. Anyway, my initial point was that his latest film was well-received by both audiences and critics alike, countering this suggestion that you were in the minority in celebrating a film like Goodbye To Language. There's also a good case to be made for the idea that Godard was actually more popular in the early 1980s in the US than he was in the 60s, with the Dick Cavett interview on the recent Every Man For Himself disc (it helps that Godard decided to embrace, or at least tolerate, his celebrity around the time of that film's release, in an attempt to make a return to mainstream cinema). Ah *Exhales*
Another century, another Godard revolution of film. So, what else is new? In Breathless it was the edititing and camera movement/placement. Now it's 3D. That shot sounds amazing. I have a suspicion that James Cameron will use it, or Michael Bay for some explosion effects or car wrecks or some **** like that. |
