Overall 4K to me is overkill. Most films aren't done at 4K, so that would mean that a large portion of the selection would be 2K upscales (with a lot of fancy marketing trickery along with it to fool people into upgrading from their Blu-Rays), and it just isn't nearly worth the investment of a new expensive UHD/4K TV and new UHD/4K Blu-Ray player.

My Blu-Ray player has 3D functionary and can upscale to 4K, but I don't see myself going down the 3D or 4K path for a long time, unless forced to.

Yes it has affected me a little bit but not much.

I am suspicious of how successful 4k will actually be and how many titles will be released.

Blu-ray, as it is, can be absolutely stunning. Like I said a few posts back, I will make the jump to 4K but not as an early adopter this time around. I view my blus on a 70 inch tv and they look phenomenal, most if them anyway. Like I said, a well mastered blu looks as good if not better than going to the theater as it is now. 4k blu-ray will really have to blow blu-ray away visually to get me pumped about it!

I don't think so. I'm honestly still impressed by many restorations released on blu-ray. I've also seen some restorations in a cinema as well as in my home on blu-ray and they looked about the same to me.

My TV is only 40" mind you and I've heard that imperfections in blu-ray transfers are more noticeable, but I just don't see myself with a set up where a good blu-ray will look unacceptable. I'm always seeing mention of how great some movies look on a big projection screen of 100" or more.

There's many movies I'm thankful to be seeing on blu-ray as it is and plenty that haven't (and may never) even get a HD release. Hell, just releasing a movie on blu-ray is a major risk for Adam from Third Window Films in the UK. Plenty of their titles are DVD only. Blu-ray won't be the last physical format and I'm sure it won't be the best but I won't be buying into 4K considering I can already get the quality of a presentation you would see in cinemas on blu-ray.

This hits the nail on the head for me. Forget resoolution, THE most crucial areas that Blu-ray is mostly limited by to me is compression, bit-depth, dynamic range, color gamut - How many releases have we seen marred by banding? I've lost count of the discs in my collection that exhibit some form of banding, and if you're into animation then the problem is ten times more of an issue than regular film! BD just doesn't cut the mustard when it comes to fully accurate colour rendition & 4K should go some way to fixing that.

People will come around when they see the improvements in colour in 4K, take for example the Srudio Ghibli films which look sensational on Blu-ray in Japan but still have niggling banding issues, the moment folks on here see these in 4K they're gonna be forking out $1000+ to rebuild their collections again, you mark my words!

Hate to break it to you, but if anything on the 97 New Line DVD Brad Pitt's face is more orange!. Oh and the Se7en Blu-ray looks fantastic and isn't in the slightesrt bit teal-orangified.

Never. If anything, the lower resolution DVD format is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Its good enough for the masses and that's why Blu-ray has never fully overtaken its predecessor. You are crazy f you think 4K stands a chance. At best, it will have an extremely small niche like laserdiscs. Hell, there's still hundreds of good films that have yet to be released on Blu-ray. Blu-ray is the last packaged media format and DVD is the last truly successful format.

I know people have a lot of money invested in their current set up but honestly who's going to turn away from increased quality and resolution if they have the option. I'm all for 4k becoming the standard.

I haven't decreased my BD buying even though I bought a Vizio UHD TV, actually the opposite I've been buying more frequently.

I think you are correct here. This is just me speculating but I personally lived throught the VHS, Laser Disk, DVD and now BD era and I think, based on BD sales, that we will have a Laser Disk type phenomenon, but actually less successful than laserdisk (which had a huge catalogue).

A good dose of reality: DVD sales are still nearly 70% of total disc sales. That's just the truth. If Blu-ray couldn't usurp its popularity how in the hell is 4K gonna do it? As much as I love packaged media and the Blu-ray format, I fear the end is coming sooner than later.

4K kind of seems overkill. Aren't most digital cinemas projected at 2K these days anyway?

Will the difference really be noticeable on a much smaller screen at home? I'm not so sure.

4k isn't about that. It's being set up as more of a digital streaming service. They claim in a few years you'll be able to stream 4K at the same quality a physical disc would be (with the h.265 codec making files smaller). That's really what 4K is about, not really any kind of uptick in quality on physical discs, which will be negligible unless you have a gigantic screen anyway.

A lot of people are missing the point or just don't have the knowledge about what 4K will really mean in terms of home video delivery.

The above posts have it right, it's not about just the resolution, it's the color depth that will knock your socks off even a lowly 1080p with greater color depth with give the appearance of much greater resolution, and for that you don't need a large display to get the benefits of 4k HDR, beleave me when you see an HDR 10 bit image on a 4k display you will be singing a different tune, and I'm not talking about the piss poor demos you have seen at Best Buy or the current crop of 4k sets. in the mean time I will continue to support and buy blu-Rays.

Actually, you didn't get my point or was purposely misquoting me. I was talking about 4K as a packaged media NOT digital streaming which is obviously the future. So actually, you agree with me 100%. And the worst habit of many who lurk in these threads is taking other's comments out of context. Its deceptive at best.

Let me be clear in what I was saying. 4K will never be a widely accepted format as a packaged media. Period. That's all I said. 4K as a streaming service is an entirely different matter.

My BD buying slowed down a cpl years ago, but not because of 4K. I am one who really enjoys streaming what I want when I want and enjoy not having to worry about space for disks. My glory days of collecting was during the DVD days. I have zero interest in 4K, still love BD and know it's quality is unmatched by streaming. But the convenience, price and space saving of streaming has really taken the edge in my life.

All this talk about "the future of streaming" needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I'll tell you what you are going to get in the future... bandwidth caps. So how high can you go with streaming quality before your local bandwidth craps out... that is the question.

You're right. Most films are filmed at 8K or above, and have been mastered at 2K mainly, until now. The Sound of Music for example was filmed at 16K, scanned at 8K, downgraded to 4K and slapped on 2K blu-ray disc!

I personally will upgrade right away, but will only get a 4K player for starters, as long as they are backwards compatible. I can already tell the difference between 4K mastered discs and 2K.

Absolutely not. My instincts tells me that, 4K will be a niche market in the video department, the same as DVD-A, and SACD were for audio.
