Default A little purchasing help

So, I'm looking to move into NYC real soon, so my "theater" space is going be the living room of a 2 bedroom apartment. It's going to be small.

I'll be bringing to the new apartment my Samsung 46 inch LNA550, my PS3, a kenwood center speaker and 2 kenwood bookshelf rears (I dont know what model the kenwood speakers are, but they aren't great and they aren't terrible).

I was thinking of getting the Sony 720 to replace my current receiver, and I'm not sure what to get in regards of front speakers and a subwoofer. I'm on a tight budget considering living in manhattan costs a bazillion dollars a month.

Any suggestions?

yikes..... If I were faced with a move to NYC, I'd probably just get the 720 you're looking at, and getting another pair of the same bookshelf's to match, and getting a small sub, so you have 5.1, for a confined space......

That's my "budget friendly" suggestion..... other suggestion would be to get the receiver, (I'd recommend the Denon, Yamaha, or Marantz models that can be had for right at $300 or so) and adding a 5.1 system such as the Kef, Axiom, or B&W, depending on budget..... but you're looking at $700-$1,800 or so total, depending on what one you go with (you don't need to match the sub with the Axiom or B&W to save money, and get a more reasonably priced sub)

Any bookshelf fronts/subwoofer recommendations? It doesn't need to thump hard, cause i'll end up getting kicked out of my apartment if i get bored and play with it (I rattle the house with my Velodyne VLF-1012). I just need something that will be clear and serviceable for 2 years or so.

The 720 doesn't isn't really that great a receiver. We have it in our store. Although it's the cheapes receiver that can handle HDMI input of sound. If you wanna spend a little more you might consider the "Onkyo 606" or the "Yamaha 663"

As for speakers. get some Klipsch Surround Set. Like Quintet Synergy II

I'd look at this site, maybe get some ideas...... but I don't have any particular bookshelf recommendations, because you have to decide what sounds good to you....

I'd avoid HTIB sets because you already have a capapble Sub, and can use some of your current speakers for surrounds.

why not? If you're not bringing that one, I'd hope you're not planning on buying a new one

Im gonna buy a new one. my current sub would get me kicked out of the apartment within 3 days. Its a Velodyne VLF-1012. I don't need that kind of power in an apartment

volume knob

I have a 14" Def-tech reference series sub.... 1,800 watt amp, blah-blah-blah...... I still leave it on when I watch movies when my 8 month old son is sleeping in the next room (with shared wall, but that will change when we move into our new home) I just don't turn it up that loud!

That Velodyne will be faster in response, and more detailed, then the subs you're going to look at in the price range you're trying to stay in.....

Keep the Velodyne! Turn the volume control down and you will be just fine. As far as bookshelf speakers go, it depends on your listeninig taste and you should audition speakers but depending on your budget I would recommend these:
Very low budget: http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=ATLS100 at $99.00 a pair you can't beat it (matching center is 99.00 also)

Medium budget: Axiom, Aperion, Paradigm, NHT, Polk - stuff on that line

Generous Budget: B&W, KEF, Snell,...audition as many as you can in your price range. Good luck!!!!
