Default 1080p vs 720p

im thinking about getting a 32 inch 720p HDTV and I was wondering when watching blu rays will there be much of a difference between the 720p and the 1080p? My parents have a 1080p and it looks great i was wondering how much of a difference there would be? sorry if there is already a topic on this. thanks.

You won't get the full Blu-Ray experience, since all Blu-Ray releases are 1080p, and a few being 1080i. With 1080i, probably would be fine with 720p. But for those movies that are full 1080p, you will be missing some quality.

This is a huge aspect of discussion, lol. At your size, 37" - there will be little if any difference! You're fine, don't worry.

Exactly. There are some people who I would call 1080p snobs, that everything must be in 1080p. But when your talking about resolution, that is not the only thing that makes a great picture. There are many other factor's that come into play. The general rule of thumb is if you sit 1.5x or greater the screen width, then you won't notice a difference between 1080p or 720p. Now if you sit closer than 1.5x the screen width then you will be able to see the difference. You should be fine with 720p at 37" though.

the closer you sit the better 1080p would be...

but if you have a smaller screen and sit a good ways back, the difference is indistinguishable.

TV size vs. sitting distance

+1. and a lot of sets these days(like mine) also accept a 1080p input sig. so you get damn near close 1080p results

hes talking about feeding the TV a 1080p output signal from the bluray player.

But if your TV has a fixed pixel count of 1366 x 768 pixels, then it does not matter if you feed it a 1080p signal, the best you'll ever get is ~720p.

You'll learn a bunch of new things if you hang out here long enough.

If you're looking to get an LCD, i recommend mine. 32", 120hz, 1080p input, 8500:1 contrast, and under a grand at most stores..... Best bang for the buck IMO as far 32".

You will get a nice picture with 720p, but with some loss in detail and film grain by not mapping blu-ray's 1080p 1:1 for each pixel. Stick with a brand name like SONY or Samsung and look for high contrast ratios. The PQ realy starts to go down if it is below 10,000:1. If you have a PC that has the older analogue VGA and not DVI/HDMI out, a 15 pin PC D-connecter is a big plus. Otherwise use the digital HDMI or 2nd best DVI if it is available. My 32" Samsung works overtime as a TV/PC monitor. I like the idea of only one display device, it really reduces the clutter.

If you have a PS3 and HDMI cable, then your are set to go.
