Blu-ray was down around 8-9 percent last year while DVD was down 11-12 percent. That's according to a 52 week summation of the HMM figures for 2014.

According to the DEG report discs were down as a whole 10.7 percent.

Not surprising that Japan would have the highest Blu-ray market share of any country, since it is ground zero for Blu-ray and they are always one step ahead of everywhere else as far as home video and tv tech is concerned.

What is surprising is that even though they have a higher Blu-ray adoption than the U.S. (which I presume is second), that the U.S spends nearly 3 times per capita on discs (they probably have 10x more disc since Japan discs are so expensive). Also, most revenue still comes from disc rental.

Pretty damn Nice to see Blu Ray sales is up yet again this week and pushing physical sales up as well while DVD is down. Blu Ray percentage is also a little better than last week as well. Very Nice

I think we all need to accept this is the way things are heading. I think we are concerned about the wrong thing. Rather than worry about DVD still hanging around, we should be focused on the worrying shift fro big screen tv to tablets and smartphones. I have said all along that streaming will affect home cinema in a negative way and I still believe that. There was a time when such opinions belonged to click bait articles and bloggers desperate for views/traffic but more and more I see this opinion/view creeping into respected sites such as dedicated home cinema magazines/websites etc.. I do my best to avoid click bait sites but I see this observation in a lot of places. Film magazines, home theatre, and to give you a very recent example, it's even appearing in websites I visit daily. Along with bluray.com I visit another site and read of someone with a similar concern to mine (read the 4k paragraph)
http://www.doblu.com/2015/01/19/best-2014-matts-picks/

How can people not see this coming? It's almost identical to what happened in the music industry. (Smaller compressed files, much lower quality, consumed on small portable devices) I think people need to wake up to what is happening and stop embracing streaming as it will kill home cinema. If genuine home cinema writers and dedicated HQ websites are noticing this development, maybe I am not mad? I know the temptation is to add this post to the 'sky is falling' section but that would be the same as people who are blindly falling in love with the 'convenience card' at the cost of a true home cinema experience. This is going to happen guys and it needs to stop or we will All end up with SD low bit rate streams on a phone or smartwatch.

I think everything will coexist; DVD, blu-ray, 4k blu-ray, streaming, Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, On Demand, YouTube.. watching on 75" LED screens, 40" screens, 13" laptops, tablets, smartphones, smart watches...

No, but they will.
Large led tvs, Laptops, tablets and smartphones are all still selling, so society is viewing things on all four displays. And blu-ray, DVD, and streaming are still being utilized, be it through blu-ray stand alones, game consoles, computers, smart TVs...
To me it looks like we simply have multiple options

Um, no, Vinyl is considered, rightly or wrongly, an audiophile product. Fact is, vinyl is often the only way to buy an album that hasn't been compressed to within an inch of its life. Now not all vinyl buyers take that into account, to be sure, but you can bet some do (myself included) and will do a tiny bit of research before buying a record.

(and, don't forget, we kept it going through the dark years, where everyone considered it dead beyond hope. it hasn't just come back to life, it's just grown)

Exactly. Portable televisions have been around for almost as long as television itself and screens keep getting bigger.

Small, convenient and cheap are nothing new. If they haven't killed big and expensive by now then big and expensive are probably pretty safe.

Nope, but I do know there is a shift coming and you guys can't see it. The very future of the big screen is in trouble as things are. Lke I said, even enthusiasts are beginning to see this. Let me know when you agree with me.

The portable tv is a silly argument imo. Those things didn't connect to virtually any content you desire. You couldn't take them out with you, you couldn't browse several different services and instantly pick a tv show or user generated content. You couldn't take it to bed with you and of course you couldn't fit it in your pocket. Once again, I repeat people are attached to these things like never before. It's a new behaviour that isn't going away.

I suppose the guy on the article is living in a fantasy world as well?

Yes, portable devices have improved over the years. Technology does that. It makes things better over time. Take TVs, for instance. Living room TVs used to be pretty small. Now they're pretty big.

But your memories of portable televisions are a wee bit selective.

You couldn't take a tv out with you? Have you ever tailgated (or whatever they call it over there)? You couldn't take a tv to bed with you? I had a tv like six feet from bed and I'll bet you did too. Content was limited? Portable DVD players have been around for almost twenty years.

You also talk about 'what's happened' in the music industry. What exactly has happened? People who used to carry FM radios and cassette players are carrying MP3 players. This is cause for hand-wringing? Music indoors is as good as it's ever been and portable music is better than it's ever been.

These are Good Things.

I'm reluctant to psychoanalyze a complete stranger based on one sentence but yeah, if he thinks tvs are going anywhere he is most certainly living in a fantasy world.

But he probably doesn't think tvs are going anywhere. He's probably just engaging in some good old-fashioned whinging about 'these kids today'.

People do that, you know.

So why are others starting to see this trend for home cinema. See my link.

He speaks of a move to minature screens for home cinema. His words not mine. The guy sounds like he is a home cinema enthusiast and writes about blurays etc.,
