Seriously, though, wristwatches (and smartphones/tablets) will never replace TVs. Not gonna happen.
Sure, younger people may like watching stuff on their smaller screens today, but what happens when many of them grow up and get married & have kids? They're not going to want to have a family movie night watching a movie on a phone or tablet. They're going to want to watch it on a TV!

When we started getting 16:9 ratio flat panel TVs, that diagonal measurement jumped significantly because of the wider ratio. It was like a square compared to a rectangle.
When the diagonal measurement is used, the aspect ratio is irrelevant in regards to the actual size of the TV (in square inches). Whether the AR is 4:3 or 16:9, a 50" TV (as an example) will have the same screen area (2500 in^2) and hence size. Only the shape is different, so the screen size didn't jump because they changed the shape. They just made them bigger.

Or is that all just much ado about nothing?
Watching movies on the plane isn't a plan you make. It simply a means to pass the time. Nobody schedules to watch their anticipated movie on a plane. And a plane is pretty much the only place you'll have two hours or more of waiting, so a movie is better than nothing... so comparing watching a movie on a plane seat headrest isn't the same as purposely running to your bedroom, in your house, to watch a film in your phone.

If you're a person that goes out of their way, and makes plans to watch a feature film on their phone, you've made a grave mistake.

Waiting at the motor vehicle, in a Dr's office, at the bus stop, between classes...etc are all times that are ideal to watch funny YouTube clips, educational videos, read...etc Not watch a feature film.

Haaaa I don't know.
I know Anna Kendrick's character chose to watch The Breakfast Club on her laptop in Pitch Perfect... so that pissed me off.

She will never do anything to piss me off, plus a smaller screen will hide all that dnr and EE.
So she made the right choice

The kids? Watching their smartwatch or phone in bedroom! The married couple? Watching their synced smartwatches or smartphones.

Haaaa touché.
Good one.
But seriously, I thought it was weird when her character made it a plan to set up and watch a two hour movie....on her 13" laptop on her thighs. Of course this is a slippery slope. Next she'll watch it on an iPad on her kitchen counter while baking cookies, then watch it on her phone while getting a pedicure.
I don't care if its Mulholland Dr or an Adam Sandler movie, something is....missing...when ya watch any movie on such devices.
Now a 22 minute episode of South Park, Seinfeld, or Modern Family is just fine to watch on an iPad. I don't know why. It just seems different when it comes to movies

I seriously doubt anyone is going to want to watch anything on a 1 inch watch screen.
And even if the kids do watch some stuff on their smartphones or tablets, the family will still have a TV. You're just being paranoid about all of this.

Com on man. I am sorry to say this but this paranoia of yours is getting pretty ridiculous. Noway is smartphones replacing tv's in families living rooms. Not happening no family is gonna want to sit huddled up infront of a freaking smartphone or tablet instead of sitting infront a big tv.

Exactly. Everything will coexist. Just like people. I'm only kidding, people won't.

DVD sales down but Blu Ray sales up and is the reason physical sales went up in the week
Yes, and a broken clock is correct twice per day. That week was the first week since November 8th that BD sales were up over previous year. Any single week makes absolutely no difference anyway. What counts is cumulative sales to date. And BD was down for year in 2014 and it's down so far in 2015. There was no Black Friday or Christmas bump. The question is why not? Why were BDs apparently not given as gifts this past holiday season? Were the movies not good enough? Is it now considered a commodity? Is online availability killing it?

My opinion is that movies are so available from so many sources and there's so much junk being issued and so many look-alike films, that the mass culture no longer considers films important and therefore they consider them disposable. If films are disposable, there's no need to own them.

In the 1970s, there was tremendous interest in the history of film and universities developed tons of film courses over the next 20 years. But except in the film schools like NYU and UCLA, I think there's been a big retrenchment in student interest in films. To me, the beautiful Blu-ray sets of the Keaton and Chaplin films, "Citizen Kane", the "Seven Samurai" and so many others are treasures. But I grew up in an age when it was impossible for most people to own good copies of such films. Just as today's young people don't value owning music, I don't think most people value owning films. And even when they do, they're content watching the films on portable devices. If they did truly value these films, Blu-ray would be far more successful than it is.

Edit: the last two weeks have been up vs. last year for BD, not just the last week.

Yeah, people act as though you have to do one thing and that's it forever. I bang on about vinyl but I don't sit there and listen to vinyl whenever I want to listen to something just because I made some sort of choice in the 80s. I've got 1000s of CDs, loads of MP3, FLAC etc, cassettes, bluray audio, SACD and they're all loved and do the thing they're supposed to do splendidly.

They have? I use Netflix and still purchase Blu-ray. I see streaming as a substitute to cable and then a supplement to physical media.

I don't know anyone who watches movies on a smartphone. Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu (among many others) are all available directly on my TV.
